The best place to start is with the anime of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, then Akane Maniax. KGNE chronologically precedes both Akane Maniax and Muv-Luv. KGNE is a sobering drama, while Akane Maniax is a more lighthearted and slapstick. Once you've gotten through both anime, you can then start the visual novels. Muv-Luv's first half, Extra, is similar to Akane Maniax, and its second half Unlimited only somewhat similar. Alternative is very different, but in an awesome way. I'm pleased your interested, after I clean up my box I'll send you some links to all of this.
