I actually didn't even realize his final move with the bungee gum broke some of fingers until I saw it in the anime. I knew he broke some of fingers catching the ball, but not during his final move....

The biggest critique I would give is the opening. Reflecting on the various ways people react moments before death is interesting, but it doesn't add too much here. That kind reflection would fit...
