I almost didn't watch this video because Sonic Forces' story in no way merits any kind of defense for its abysmal quality to last half an hour of my time. But I forced myself to listen for a minute to get the gist of where the commentator would focus on. And as soon as he talked about how he thinks that Sonic Forces shouldn't be bashed for having a dark story because the comics can make that work...

No. I don't need to watch that video anymore. Sonic Forces' story isn't getting hated on simply because it is trying to be serious or "dark". It's hated because its attempts at being serious and "dark" are obnoxious and terribly written.

    Spoiler:
After Sonic is defeated by the not-Sinister Six, Eggman's rise to world domination is told through a single panel of text covering a six month timeskip.

Sonic got tortured for six months off-screen (Sonic's friends literally say that several times, no joke) yet perfectly fine when we see him get rescued.

Tails is incompetent throughout the entire storyline and not once is ever useful, to the point of needing Classic Sonic to save him from Chaos 0 and not being able to fix a damaged Omega (who somehow gets repaired off-screen to make a surprise save near the end of the story).

All of Sonic's friends barely contribute to the story besides saying cliche war rebellion quotes and yelling random nonsense in the middle of gameplay to annoy you.

Classic Sonic is shoved into the story for no reason and disappears for no reason, without any relevance throughout the story as an afterthought.

The Avatar barely contributes to the story besides suddenly being Sonic's partner, getting generic token praise all over the place.

The Phantom Ruby's origin and power is inconsistent and random as hell. One minute it makes illusions so real that they hurt people, and by the end of the story Eggman tries to create a giant sun to smash into the earth and destroy the resistance (even though it will destroy him with his entire empire).

Infinite became Eggman's greatest weapon because he got a schoolyard beating from Shadow and was insecure about being called weak. So he really is the embodiment of a shallow, childish, edgy, overpowered fanfic character (he even has heterochromia under the mask lol) that constantly talks about smelling your fear and letting you live because of his inflated ego. He also never interacts with Shadow again after that encounter. He also just disappears when he's defeated and we have no idea what happens to him, so he was a waste of time we will probably never see again.

Eggman's hyped up league of villains turn out to be illusions, with Shadow and Chaos 0 being defeated in cutscenes without ever even showing up as bosses.

Eggman's funny and conceited personality is almost completely sucked out to make him a generic villain that only issues exposition and threats.

The Eggman Empire is bland as hell. When I first learned Eggman taking over the world would be the premise, I expected natural environments being torn down and having giant buildings and theme parks with his face plastered everywhere and statues being erected in his kooky narcissistic glory. Instead, we get:

Bland grey factories/bases, the Death Egg getting rehashed again, Green Hill with sand and random robot parts in the background at the end of the first level, a casino in a forest that seems like a normal casino Sonic level, and a realistic city being attacked by Eggman robots. How underwhelming. Sonic CD's Bad Futures had dozens of times more creativity than that.

The designs of his robots are also changed to white-colored generic designs that lose all of the surreal fun they originally had. As if to say that attempting a serious story means you have to ditch having a vibrant creative identity in art-style. You have no idea how frustrated I am that this will likely be the only time we will ever get an "Eggman takes over the world" premise, and this is all we get.

And here is the most apt description I can use for the game's final boss:

    Spoiler:

    That is pathetic.

The only thing that video probably gets right is saying that the Sonic comics can do good serious stories. Which is why Ian Flynn should become the head writer for the video games. But of course, Sonic Team's incompetence will never allow for that. It's like they tried to shove everything they could into this game to make all facets of the Sonic fanbase happy (from Classic fans and Modern gameplay fans to serious Adventure story to fan art creators), but with such a shallow approach that it does none of those groups justice. It only results as a mediocre stew of a whole pantry of ingredients haphazardly poured in that only manages to just barely be edible, yet simultaneously bland.

I think that on a purely theoretical level, Sonic stories can be serious and even "dark" since that's that can be proven to work for the likes of Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper. But in order for that to be done, they need to actually try having qualitative standards by listening to feedback and taking a long break to reevaluate the franchise's creative direction. But Sonic Team most likely will not, as usual.

If you like the game, fine, but I really struggle to find anything that make defending the game worth the trouble besides Eggman hiring a group of jackal mercenaries in the tie-in comic. That was cool and could have been expanded upon, but of course something interesting like that isn't in the game.

    Spoiler:
The six months of torture are what I find particularly odd. If you don't want to go balls out and show a haunted Sonic or something, fine, but don't half-measure it. I know Eggman isn't Satan or something, but in a world where he's enslaved most of the world and is about to you, y'know, win, he'd do more to get his enemy out of the way.

The Jim Cummings Robotnik is in a similar world, yet felt 10x more threatening

I can take a half-assed attempt at classic 2D gameplay, neutered boost gameplay, and Original the Character and try to make the best of it. But a boring Eggman is unacceptable for me. Now I know this is a trash game.

Oh great they brought that back huh?

Beyond cameos, guests spots....or illusions like Zavok.

Given we kind of got that with Eggmanland and the theme park from Colors would be a bit redundant.....though with them bringing back Green Hill Zone and Classic Sonic that'd be a bit of a double standard.

More like Sega won't reevaluate the series creative direction because they're scared of publishing ambitious Sonic titles.

I wonder if when Sonic says that Zavok hates fun is a reference to that Archie Comic Panel.

They were bound to due to Mania's cliffhanger true ending.

I can't wait to see Infinite in the next Olympics title lol.

I didn't actually mean that we needed another theme park beyond maybe one zone, that's already a bit old. I really meant zones that capture how vibrant, colorful, mechanical, zany, and narcissistic Eggman's territories tend to be. That really shows he made his signature on the world he conquered. Not Green Hill with sand that is only in the background and a slightly chilly Chemical Plant. Why is Chemical Plant even like that instead of being fully active or upgraded?

More like Sega won't reevaluate the series creative direction because they're scared of publishing ambitious Sonic titles.
They gave all this talk two or three years ago about making their developing teams take more time with increased qualitative standards to make better games. Glad to see it was only talk.

I think they did give the Forces and Mania teams more time, but there just isn't any real talent at Sonic Team anymore.

While Forces was obviously the worst, that just made the whole of Boost Sonic'dom look terrible to me. It must suck being an animator/coder; working on enemy design and attack patterns, knowing that almost no gamers will ever see it as they blast through them.

Sonic Forces is going to be 25 bucks at Best Buy on Black Friday.

Edit: it's also scheduled to be 30 at Gamestop and Walmart.
