Default Eiichiro Oda interview in NA Shounen Jump?

Did anyone else check that out? It's in this month's issue. I didn't buy it so I can't upload it here or type it out,but I found some of it interesting. Especially the part about how he wants to be Luffy because he dreams of being able to stretch like that and when he says he thinks Usopp is the Strawhat he would probably get along best with. It seems like he's living through Luffy, giving him the stretching ability and then making Usopp his bestfriend..

Why are you comparing it to cultural engravings and burritos.

I didn't see it, but the Usopp thing is probably right. That's what he got on the Blue Data Book's character quiz.

Explain plz? Oda-sensei took a character quiz that's in that book or something? Where exactly is this quiz? I'd like to take it..

I have an interview from him in ASJ from back in like 2002-2003 or something. It's an old issue.

What is NA mean? North American?
I haven't read that issue even though I've had it for like 2 weeks, I might read it now that I have some time.

If someone has the issue with the interview, I'd gladly appreciate it if you could scan it so I can type it up and put it up on the site, thanks!

I have it; I guess I can copy it down. Expect an edit shortly.

    edit: Here it is.

    Spoiler:
    "Meet the REAL Pirate King!"
US Shonen Jump August 2007 issue

Shonen Jump: If you gave Luffy a
    present, what would it be?
    Eiichiro Oda: Meat. He probably
    wouldn't be happy otherwise.
SJ: And what do you think Luffy would
    give you?
EO: I think he'd give a piece of that
    meat back. [Laughs]

    -

SJ: Pirates seem like a global
phenomenon these days on the Internet,
in Hollywood movies, in video games.
Did you sense that these seafaring
    adventurers would become so popular,
back in 1997 when One Piece was
    first published?
EO: I wouldn't say I saw it coming, but
I knew everyone loved pirates. I wanted
to read [manga] about them when I was a
kid, but there weren't any out there,
and I kept windering why. I drew the
kind of manga I wanted to read,
    believing that everyone naturally loved
    pirates, too.

    -

SJ: One Piece is an incredible
story with lots of colorful characters
and unexpected plot twists. How long
had you been dreaming about this
    adventure before you started following
    it?
E: Hmm... I was in junior high... so
about seven years. I told myself, "If I
did a serial manga, it would have to be
    a pirate manga!"

    -

SJ: Have you ever been on a real pirate
    ship?
EO: No, not on a pirate ship, but I've
been on a sailing ship. I know they
aren't easy to sail in real life, but I
can easily draw them as if they are in
    the manga. [Laughs]

    -

    SJ: Do you get seasick?
    EO: No, not really.
SJ: What did you think about sailing?
It takes hard work to sail a ship.
Everyone on board has to do their part,
like pull ropes and such, or else the
ship won't move. So it's not realistic
at all to have moments of relaxation
like there are in One Piece.

    -

SJ: Do you like to sail?
EO: I love to sail! I wish I could just
    sail off somewhere... [Laughs]

    -

SJ: You're responsible for the most
    successful pirate manga ever created!
Does the pressure of being so
    successful ever drive you crazy?
EO: No, I don't feel the pressure. I
just draw true to what I want to draw,
rather than feel the pressure and make
compromises about what I really want to
draw, because people have accepted what
    I've drawn.

    -

SJ: Do you ever sing pirate songs when
you're at home alone and nobody's
    watching?
EO: I don't know any pirate songs. I'd
    sing them if I did.

    -

SJ: If you could swap places with one
of your characters for a day, who would
    it be? And why?
EO: It would be Luffy, of course. Just
once I'd like to be able to stretch
    like him.

    -

SJ: And who would you want for a
    brother or sister?
EO: Usopp might be the most fun to hang
around with. I think we'd get along.
    -

SJ: American fans love Chopper. How did
you getthe idea for him, and how did
    you go about creating him?
EO: I wanted a kind of mascot - and I
don't mean that as something negative.
    I didn't want just a cute mascot, I'd
want him to be fearless. Chopper may
look cute on the outside, but he's
tough on the inside. That's how I came
    up with him.

    -

SJ: Luffy seems to sleep a lot on any
given day, when he's not eating or
having fun with his crew. What does he
dream about? Could it be eating? Or
    becoming King of the Pirates?
EO: He'd dream about something fun, in
any case. Maybe he dreams about food
    most of the time.
SJ: Like what sort of food? Probably
meat, since he eats a lot of it.
    [Laughs]

    -

SJ: Do you have a message for readers,
like the ones who want to grow up to be
    pirates in real life?
EO: Well, it's fine to venture out to
sea, but I wouldn't want them to be
    doing pirate stuff. [Laughs]
    Well, maybe treasure hunting's okay...
I'd say, please grow up to be
    upstanding people who are considerate
    of others!

Something feels wrong about the interview.

Oda's trade mark one-man manzai seems disjointed here - normally, in professional interviews and in public he's really serious, but he's out of control wacky in the SBS where he's given free reign. This feels like an SBS, which is, dare I say, out of character.

Most of the info isn't new, but I find it cool that Oda got to tell everyone in the ELC about his beef with mascot characters. We know the story, but now everyone else does too.

However, I still dislike VIZ Media's inane use of "pirate/ninja" when describing manga. For people who think a little bit, OP is really the only pirate manga, there's nothing distingusihing about call it "the best pirate manga" if it's the only one in its class. Unless one is Maddox.

Naruti at least has competition from that one manga about the fire nin, Flame of Recca?

That could be so much better if the questions weren't so..tamed. And it's like the interviewer didn't know too much about OP or Oda.

"Do you ever sing pirate songs when you're at home alone and nobody's watching?"
    Seriously, wtf.

I guess Viz figured they had asked him all the good questions in his first interview with them... four years ago.

Well, I bought this issue of SJ just for this interview....

AND WTF WAS THAT?! For christ sake. Oh well, the colored title page makes up for it.

Yeeeeeeeeeah. That was kinda like huh? It's not like there are really many pirate songs in Japanese except the PotC theme.

And I was also kinda taken back since Oda does know a pirate song. Granted it's one he created for the series but yeah.

Hey, how'd you guys like that shit on Chopper? I brought you that months ago Speaking of which....is Chopper really popular in the US or were they just saying that?

Wait, how come the American SJ interacted with Oda? Don't they just translate the Japanese SJ's interviews?

    New to me o_o

And thanks for bringing it up Rixter.

....no, they don't translate someone else's interview.

All I know is, I own 5 more chapters of Naruto mainly for this. But like I said, the One Piece title page in color makes up for it.
