If say you choose black and your wearing all black, like Shunsui was when he attacked Stark, his attack would do heavy damage on Stark.
    Did you read the chapter?

Shunsui says grey even though he's not wearing grey but Stark is and thats when Shunsui is able to damage Stark. Shunsui then says you have to say the color you want to cut. Stark says white and thats why he is able to attack Shunsui because Shunsui is wearing white. Shunsui then says completely contrary to your statement that the color that you choose can damage yourself as well. So far these are the rules

    1. You can only damage your opponent if you call the color they are wearing.
    2. The color you call can also damage yourself.

    We have Shunsui=White and Stark=Grey

Shunsui then throws off his white and says Black and which point Stark is cut even though he isn't wearing Black. Theres got to be something messed up with the rules so if someone could clarify it would be appreciated.

Yeah I read the chapter. Shunsui said Grey but when he attacked Stark it felt like a shallow attack since Shunsui wasn't wearing Grey. Stark did recieve damage it just wasn't a effective attack at all.

    Shunsui: Grey.

    10
Starrk: Tch... // (The wound is shallow......?! // That felt like a blow strong enough to take my whole arm off...)

    11
Starrk: ("Irooni"... // "Grey"... // My arm is grey...... // There is no grey on his body......)
    Shunsui: What's wrong?

Now if you call a color that you are wearing as well. Your attack will be more powerful. Shunsui said Grey as a hint to Stark that it's not the coloring the person you are attacking is wearing but what you are wearing. Since calling a color you aren't wearing is a weak attack. Stark called white since he is wearing white not becuase Shunsui was wearing white. Shunsui commented that he was impressed that Stark count on that quick from just noticing from the observation from what I quoted above.

Basically the effectiveness is based on what you are wearing. Not what your opponent is wearing. Since Shunsui is wearing all black, now that he called out black his attacks will be extremely effective.

If the point of him using grey was to show an example of a weak attack why didn't he just use a random color violet or fuchsia. And if it was important to note that the damage is based on what color the attacker is wearing why did Stark even comment that he was wearing grey, it would've been irrelevant. He should've just said "He's not wearing grey" and left it at that. If he takes into account that he is wearing grey and Shunsui is not and that was the reason for the weak attack he would've logically come to the conclusion is the reason was He was wearing grey not that Shunsui was not. Also you assume that the grey attacks were the hints Shunsui was talking about later instead of the verbal hint he gave him. Also we never hear Shunsui call out a color other than grey for the rest of the fight which leads me to believe that he didn't change colors until he called out black.

Also we have no proof that Stark is wearing white. Because Shunsui says that the color thing can backfire as well it leads me to believe that that saying a color you are both wearing would damage both people. Shunsui instead states that White is Starks best color to use. If his previous statement is true and stark is wearing white then that should mean that he should also be damaged by his attack.

Furthermore Shunsui specifically says "Say the Color you want to cut, you won't be able to cut anything else" If your theory is correct and the damage is based on what the attack wears then Shunsui should've been unable to cut Stark at all by saying Grey since he's not wearing any grey. If the the rules are based on teh color of the attacker and what Shunsui said is true than saying Grey should not have yielded any cuts, not weaker ones shallow or not.

it would really help if we knew what color starks outfit was and at this point im kinda playing devils advocate but its not like im pulling this stuff out of my ass. There are some glaring holes here if your theory is true...

I think that kubo didn't put that much tought into it, if the power is to play any game, next time that it is used it will be another one, if it is relevant the next chapter will clarify it, if not, whatever, wasn't all that interesting.

Jesus fucking christ. Saying a color doesn't do damage by itself, or Shunsui would have killed himself when he said black. They still need to physically attack each other to do any damage. Why would Starrk slashing Shunsui do any damage to Starrk?

how don't some of you get it. You can only hurt the person if you say a color they are wearing. You then can only cut where that color is on that person.

The more that person is wearing the more damage it does. Now if you are wearing that color as well it also counts that total color area of both of you in order to calculate damage, but there is a chance you hurt yourself though. So its risky. DO you hurt yourself, no, but can you, yes. We saw a back shot where we didn't see who got hurt this chapter. So for all we know it did hurt the good guy and not stark. But the good guys aren't gonna die and stark will so who cares if stark wins this little battle the vizards are still there.

uhh but shunsui was the one who called out, "black." and it is clearly stark who got cut. http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/374/19/

yea i know. here let me make it more simple. Lets go to lets say some d&d type play style.

The attack does damage equal to opposing players color area + double attacking players color area called. Attack has chance of hurting attacking player, if attacking player is wearing called color.

    ATTACK 1
Stark is wearing 5 square feet of gray clothing (skin color, hair, whatever is included in rules i don't know)
Kyōraku is wearing 0 square feet of gray.

Thus kyoraku deals 5 points of damage to grey area on stark. (since kyoraku has no gray on 0% chance of attack hurting him instead)

    ATTACK 2
Stark is wearing 5 square feet of white
Kyoraku is wearing 15 square feet of white

Thus Stark deals 25 points of damage to white area on kyoraku. (since stark has on white there is a 25% chance of attack hurting him instead, did 5/(5+15) for 25%)

    ATTACK 3
Stark is wearing 10 square feet of black
Kyoraku is wearing 50 square feet of black

Thus stark deals 110 damage to Stark. (since kyoraku has on so much black it is 83% chance of hurting himself instead)

Though as i stated the chapter ended with us not seeing the gash, so it could very well have been damage to either one.

But the rules are that. You can only hurt a color on the opponent, in that spot the color is. The more of that color they have on the more damage they take. But also if you are wearing that color you can hurt yourself instead. I made up the rules and percentages a bit to make sense. I dont' know how the chance works, just that the more you have on the higher the risk is, but also higher reward. I hope this is understandable

Edit: this is what is posted on wiki's page. but that is fan based anyway, but sounds possible as well. Irooni (艶鬼, Colorful Demon): This is a color-based game where you say the name of the color you want to cut with your sword and you cannot cut anything else.[86] If the color that you call does not exist on your body then the damage is minimal, even if normally the attack would inflict a much more severe wound. To maximize damage, you have to use a color that maximizes the risks to your person as well as your enemy. For example, by wearing black robes and calling "black," one would inflict massive damage on a enemy if struck even if the blow was minimal, but the caller would also suffer serious damage if he/she is struck by the enemy in return

So by this understanding if you call black, then whoever lands the attack first deals the damage to that player. which makes sense, and can still apply my rules as above for damage. Just that whoever gets the first slash in during that quick game time deals the damage for that round. Then next round stark gets to call a color and him and kyoraku then do a quick dual again to see who lands the blow

Definitely fake. For one thing, no way Kubo's gonna kill Stark off so easily especially after how much it took for Barragan to die.

    I'm so dissappointed.

    Spoiler:
I expected something to happen to Harribel that would cut off her fight, but it's going to be Aizen killing her for no good reason? His third strongest espada? What a waste! Frickin idiot.

Edit: In fact, something like this makes Wonderweiss reviving her completely pointless!

Most of the fights in this manga are, to be fair, completely pointless.
