Thread: Hip Hop Thread

More about Nothing isn't really a concept album. It's more like he's a fan of Seinfeld, like I am, and finds nice little sound bites to incorporate into his songs and lyrics. The names of the songs can be considered a part of the 'concept' but I think it ends there. Look at The Soup for example, in that episode there was a new soup shop with this chef aka the 'Soup Nazi' that served amazing soup. The only thing was you had to follow really strict rules and be of his liking to get the soup. That song isn't exactly about that or has anything to do with it. He just found a creative way to spin off that and put it in the song.

I listen to Cudi, not much recently, but I still listen. Man On The moon was definitely a highlight in hip hop music last year and I played it to death. I actually don't even have it uploaded on this computer, or any of his other songs.

As for that Lupe Fiasco snippet, I love Lupe, but I'm trying to lay off leaks and snippets until I get a album

Kanye West raps mostly terribly, lyrics are all over the place, his beats can be masterpieces.

lol @ Kayne being a bitch btw. I don't think Kanye is terrible, hes getting better at rapping and you can tell he has started getting better at writing and spitting his raps.

I know everyone that likes hip hop has been noticing how many good albums that have been dropped this year, right. Top 5?

I'm going to assume that you use rateyourmusic.com. If you do, can I see it? I have been slipping on hip hop this year because I decided to get into some metal. So the only hip hop albums I've heard has been the mainstream stuff so far

My 2010 list isn't public, and I won't make it public until I reach a quota.

I also recommend these so far though, apart from the other 5.

    G&D - Someothaship
    Freeway - Stimulus Package
Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives
    Shad - TSOL
    Curren$y - Pilot Talk
    Slum Village - Villa Manifesto
Paul White - Paul White and the Purple Brain

    Just saying lol.

So then here's something to blow your mind I guess.

Freeway is my dude so I listened to that immediately. That was actually the first album that let me know this was going to be a great year for hip hop.

Distant Relatives has been sitting in my library for about a month and a half now, I don't know why, but I just can't bring myself to put it on.

I've been meaning to download TSOL for a while now but I'm running out of HD space. I'll just wait until my external HD and download a long with the other things on my list. I've been hearing nothing but good from it so I'm looking forward to it.

Just listened to Pilot talk for the second time yesterday. On the first listen I found it to be boring and his subject matter to be redundant. It's still redundant but I found myself enjoying it a lot more than through the first listen. It had some nice guest features and nice production. Curren$y himself has never been anything special to me. I guess I'm just not apart of the crowd he appeals to.

Villa Manifesto is sitting in the library with no spins as well

EDIT: I would not listen to Illmatic if you're not familiar with other hip hop first. You need to understand why it's a masterpiece by being able to compare it to other albums you've heard. The first time I heard it I was just blown a way and had it on repeat for 3 hours. Now, every time I hear it I appreciate it even more because I've heard other things and see how it reigns superior to almost everything

I listened to it early in my hip-hop listenings and I loved it nonetheless. Something truly great can speak for itself.

They bore me. A few great songs and I'll admit that they did compel me to listen to heavier music, but it's hard through listen to an album of theirs nowadays.

I can agree with that. Listening to Zepp made me want to listen to Black Sabbath which got me into metal lol. There are some songs from them that are just amazing but they could never really get them all on the same album. I can listen to House of the Holy a million times and never get tired of it though. There is just something about that album

I don't think I've heard that term flung around... It sounds too close to 'horror rap' for comfort, though...
