It's an open secret the movies stole a lot of details from Monkey Island (Coffin boats? A dog as jail keeper? Voodoo Lady in the swamp? I wonder they haven't tried to kill Geoffry Rush with the root beer), because Monkey Island is very popular among pirate fans. Maybe the directors of the movie made some sort of investigation and found out there's this manga series about pirates which is popular like hell? I wouldn't wonder if it had been like that.
