Thread: History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi

  1. #1

    Default History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi

I was looking through onemanga awhile ago, and ran across this series. I was surprised in that I haven't enjoyed a martial arts series like this in years. I will admit, right at the beginning, that the story is not original at all (weak young teenager joins a dojo, and becomes stronger, ends up fighting various other martial artists), but it is fun and entertaining. It takes a more realistic approach to martial arts than many anime/manga do, and I like the main character's growth as a fighter.

(Plus I find Kisara to be horribly hot for some reason)

It's not without flaws, as I said, the story is pretty cliche, but I like the characters, and I think that many of them are very easy to relate to, plus I do like the fights in it, even if they aren't OMG OVER-ZE-TOPP!

But what about you guys? Has anyone here given this series a look?

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's probably the most generic series ever created. And yet, I still like it a bit. A decently written underdog story. And I'd say Apachai is my fave character (doesn't do a whole lot I'm afraid tho).

And yeah, I think it has some pretty good fights in the series. Like Berserker vs Hermit and Kenichi vs Hermit the most. Like how it's for the most part grounded in reality. Unfortunately, I only finished the anime and not the manga, so I didn't get to see Kenichi's trainers go all out.

Yeah, watched all the anime. Waiting on a second season and/or the scanlated manga to catch up.

I really enjoyed it, even when there was a voice telling me "Dude this is really generic, why bother?" strange thing really.

Manga continues the anime from Vol. 12 if anyone's interested.

Had lots of fun watching the anime last year. The beginning is a little slow, but after 10 or so episodes the characters start to grow on you, at the same time it gets funnier and better animated (some fights are very well done). The Ragnarok arc is definitely a paradise for fans of old school shonen.
Yeah, it's generic - but then again, anime/manga isn't exactly a sea of originality these days.

I just heard a rumour that the anime of this series has been licensed for US release! Anyone else heard this?

Bump for epicness! I was wondering if anyone else had made a thread, so I searched and yay! Someone had! First of all, I don't know why, but I find Kisara to be the hottest Kenichi gal ever- at first I was with Shigure all the way, but I dunno... those legs...

I heard Kenichi had been licensed a while ago too, but I couldn't find anything specific (just floating around in a forum someone said so). I hope it's true- I'd love to be able to own the DVDs, and maybe if it becomes popular in America we'd see a second season!

i liked the anime it doesn't get 2 deep and the power ups don't become 2 ridiculous. I don't think there needs to be a second season.

Thought it was okay. Not fantastic, but it was interesting enough.

Well, I've got the first boxset of Season 1 part 1.

The dubbing is good, thank God for that.
Kenichi, Miu and everybody else sounds great, and nothing is cringeworthy. Appachai is surprisingly, just as funny in dubbed form as he is in the original. The only voice that sounds odd is Tsuji, but thankfully, he's not a major character, so it won't be here long.

I'll definitely pick up part 2.

I just started reading the manga, and I'm loving it a lot. I just find the series really interesting so far. My favorite characters so far are Haruo, Kenichi, Miu, Shigure, and Shio.

I'm wondering why onemanga.com has HSDK up to chapter 328, yet they are also re-posting the manga as History's Strongest Disciple up to chapter 7.

I've read this manga for a long time, and as of late they've been some good story arcs. Particularly where Kenchi finally starts learning to fight relatively skillfully.

And yet, I'm shocked by the current arc (that onemanga is on). It's like the story's taken a break to show us the greatest catfight ever. Didn't see that coming.....nope no way.

Edit: If I didn't make this clear, I find this current arc....awkward and difficult to take seriously.

Eventually all Shonen will get the Dragonball Kai treatment. I'm currently awaiting the perfection that will be One Piece with no filler whatsoever.

I'm also awaiting Bleach Kai. It will be the greatest joke in anime when it's ends in under 50 episodes. It'll be a great laugh.

HSDK is actually a remake of an slightly older manga that is being translated as History's strongest disciple. HSDK is much longer, more ecchi, and more developed than the first series (which has Kisara, Berserker and Hermit as the leaders of the enemy gang, Odin and Shigure are not in this series). Frankly, I consider the current one better than the old one.

It only has around 7 volumes.

I just read through Chapter 63. I love chapter 58 for just seeing for seeing Shigure, Appachi, Ma, Shio, and Amasuke in normal clothing, then what we normally see them, and Shigure for just bringing her sword to the play, just made it even more awesome.

Well I didn't expect Hermit's true identiy coming.

Thanks for clearing up that confusion. I actually just discovered what you just stated like 5 minutes ago on another forum. The world works in mysterious ways.
