@Cream of Chicken: I tried that. For some reason, Malwarebytes doesn't do anything once I've downloaded it. D: Thanks, though.

    @Chrissie: More detail, pls?

It's been a long time since I've been in the business of removing viruses, but malwarebytes should do the trick. If it wont run, it means you either don't have permissions on your computer to run it, or the virus is blocking you from running it. Right click your taskbar (bottom of your screen), open task manager, go to processes, and either screenshot it or type out the top several entries on the list. If I see it, I can identify which one you need to kill to allow you to do what's necessary to remove it.

I'm doing something right now that seems to be working. And from what I can see, I don't have a task manager. >3< dhkag;h; *just got this computer working a few hours ago*

If you don't have task manager that's a serious problem. If you hit ctrl+alt+delete it should allow you to open it.

    Here's a screenshot of it.

And I just finished downloading something. I'm not sure if it worked, but I'll see in a few minutes...

    av.exe

End that process. It's the virus.

    Okay. Done.

Is there anything else I should worry about?

Well, with that process gone the virus should no longer have a "grip" on your computer, so it wont feel like it's active anymore, but it isn't gone. Now you're simply free to take the steps necessary to remove it. If you don't, it'll be back after you reboot your PC.

I don't see any other malicious processes running off the top of my head, though.

    StpA_TMP.exe
    StpA_TMP.TMP

    delete them both.

after that open start go to run
    and type

    msconfig

go to startup tab and uncheck all programms that you dont need on startup
but... that av.exe and and StpA_TMP would be there too.. tell its location.

after that exit but dont reboot yet

There's been suspicious activity on my computer. I think it could be one virus, or more than one, but it is recurring, with different effects every time.

First time, it was some dummy antivirus thing which installed itself and blocked my other antivirus software from working. I found its root file and forcibly deleted it.

Now, there is another apparent avtivirus thing, which stopped some .exe files (except itself, I assume) from working. ctrl+alt+del wouldn't even work, so I used system restore.

I use Avira antivir, and it just popped up 4 windows about a virus and I clicked delete on them all.

    Should I be OK?

you might wanna share screen shot of startup tab in msconfig and task manager.

also in case ctrl+alt+del stops working use process explorer

regedit is another way to get task manager and such back.

These fake antiviruses are nasty and hijack a lot of stuff.

Here's another thread that had similar problems.

Darkstorm's post especially helped me when I had the task manager problem.

i wish i could remember that stuff you guys are posting, but i know I won't.

not a major crisis, but my old desktop tower is making a weird clicking sound here and there. I custom built it around 2005. The other weird thing, is that it brings up the old dial up menu for internet for no reason if i leave my pc sit for a while. sometimes i just hit cancel and keep using the internet. sometimes i have to reset the pc to make the internet work again. My internet card is one of the more powerful ones with 3 antenna and i just bought it maybe a year or 2 ago.

The only other thing that I've done to my pc recently is my friend found an old DDR ram stick for me for christmas. (yes my pc still runs on DDR) maybe it's faulty or incompatible or something? It doesn't seem like my pc is any faster than before it was installed. in fact sometimes I wonder if it's slower.

    any thoughts?

You can check Ram Stick compatibility based on your motherboard.

To find out what motherboard etc. you have without opening your computer you can simply download and run AIDA32.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html
    (Download from under Download Locations)

When you run it, check out the Motherboard -> Motherboard section.
Here you can find out what RAM type you are suppose to use based on the bus type.

In my experience though, incompatible RAM simply won't allow the computer to start - I kept getting no signal if I tried to use DDRII when my bus is DDR.

RAM also sometimes must be done in a specific order depending on the motherboard. If your new ram stick is a different size than the others then that may be the problem. I believe it usually detects the lowest size thus why it may not feel faster.

I'm not too certain about your internet problems. If it is acting wonky maybe you can reinstall network drivers if you use such. For example, if you use Dell, they offer most of their drivers online.

I have a question myself. I recently upgraded my browser (Opera) and now I see some visuals funky. For example on the Grandline scheme on this board I see all colored names as black. They show fine on the Halloween theme. Does anyone else use Opera and see things just fine? It's not an important detail but it bugs me and I am wondering if changing some settings may fix it. Thanks.

had an intresting virus today... along with other stuff which viruses normally do it it blocked nearly all security related websites.

turn out it had added about 4000 lines to this file
    windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

deleting them made it all fine. sharing just in case someone faces similar problem. you should know what to do.

I got a hideous (apparently new and infamous according to a pal who also got it) Virus a few weeks ago.

It blocked me from opening anything, including all sites, bar a website that conveniantly was trying to sell me "Internet Protection for only $66!" - It was awful. Shut down every window I opened, etc.

In the end I had to shut the computer down and system restore. But then of course I got
it again a day later. System Restored, and download SpyBot and Spyware Terminator.

It's gone now, but anyone else got this virus recently ?

EDIT: SAI - Yes - that's the message I got. Did it not allow you to open most programs ?

This also sounds like the one I had too. Wonder if they're the same?
