It would be cool if someone like Oda or Toriyama guest starred in this to encourage the two main characters. Otherwise, I can see this series going nowhere fast. I mean, at this rate they won't have a manga series running until like chapter 200.

Once again, not much happened.
Geez, although I'm wondering what their meeting with the editor will be like.
actually the story progressed a bit in this chapter
it was decent this week
I can't wait to see what the editor of shuiesha has to say about there manga.

Another pointless chapter. Nothing really exciting, and I really doubt the meeting with the editor is going to be entertaining.
Also, there's way too much text. I don't really mind text usually, but when its BORING text, it's annoying. I didn't even read the first 12 pages, and i don't think I missed anything.
Whats up with the hurry?
I enjoy the pace, I enjoyed the chapter.
Well, I've been reading and enjoying this manga quite a bit, unexpectedly.
It doesn't seem to be anything too ambitious, but it's a cute and entertaining story. And I really actually like the supposedly copious amounts of text... Most of the narration and exposition remains nicely tied in with the imagery and it never really bogs the pace down or dominates the panels too much, if you ask me. I like having something to read.
Quite a nice package, in all. It could turn sour at the drop of a hat, but for now it provides some charming sweetness in Jump's line-up.
They are trying to make a manga series and trying to balance it with their friends, family, and school life. Seriously, I think that's all we'll see so don't expect too much.
So, Shujin's got a girlfriend too. I was wondering if they'd do anything like that.
Anyway, as a fellow aspiring writer this series really speaks to me and I was really moved by how hard Shujin and mashiro worked preparing their manuscript. I can't wait to see how their meeting with the editor goes.
WTF I hate you, where is issue 8, I can't believe you made me start reading this and it's only up to issue 7.
Evil bastard, thanks for the recommendation!
Also, it's really clever, I'm pretty impressed with the author (well he did write DN) but am afraid he might screw it up as soon as they get the manga deal, like he did by killing L (DN was unreadable after IMO).
But the story is good, premise has been set, dream, ambition for the girl, nakama, a rival we haven't met yet etc. I'm not crazy about two earths, but w/e I guess if the manga they're writing is better than Bakuman, the manga within the manga would be the main manga... I've been watching too much tropic thunder.
Also I just read some of you replies, I think you should read it again from chapter 1 - 7 all at once, like I happened to do. The story goes very far, but it's not an action manga, even when it DOES go somewhere, you guys will probably bitch that there's no sharingan or something..
Shujin is awesome, his personality is very much like mine at his age, minus the top of the class genius stuff though =p.

Ooo, I liked chapter 8. It's insightful. And the ending was a great little twist.
I thought what the editor said about the most successful manga-ka being almost always the non-calculating types. It makes sense. If you don't take risks, you never get anywhere big.
I mean, look at One Piece. Can you possibly conceive of Oda calculating this to be a hit? A series about a rubber pirate? No. Oda drew what he loved, and it has evolved into a masterpiece.
But that in itself is a contradiction because Oda planned out an entire storyline before he even knew if his name accepted! So it really is lucky and a mix of both.
I would call Oda a gambler genius, kind of like our heroes. Both intelligent enough to come up with an amazing story, but at the same time not enough of a gambler that he just goes for the popular vote. I mean the first 20 or so chapters of OP aren't what drew me in, it was the total.
Hm, this chapter felt a bit too ''easy'', if you will. Still, it was nice getting a glimpse of the inside of the industry. I found it a bit ironic that the editor was saying that they had a bit too much text exposition when Ohba and Obata did Death Note, which has to be one of the most talky mangas to come out in recent years.
I thought the ending was pretty funny. My reaction would've been the same as Shujin's; trying not to laugh my ass off.
The ending was a bit too... convenient. But it doesn't matter.
Yeah, that bit was pretty funny. Although it was just an opinion of an editorOriginally Posted by Crossword

Heh. When I read the plot synopsis on OM I did'nt think i'd like Bakuman, but i'm finding it at the moment to be quite an interesting 'down to earth' story(though this is compared to the stuff I usually read)-Still on the 1st volume, though.Love the intertextual referencing aswell ('silly' media term I learned the other day which got stuck in my head >.<, sorry!)

Good chapter, i really like like it..
Ta ending was kinda funny
YANGZTER PIRATES UNITE!
Spoiler:
Not exactly the same thing, since the "calculators" referred to in this chapter simply planned the genre and story of their manga based on what was/would be popular, while Oda had just basically planned out the entirety of his story. And of course even with Oda I don't think One Piece went how he expected it to go. Didn't he plan for it to only last four years or something? Well, it was gonna be a lot shorter anyway.
But yeah, I agree that it's better to just go with drawing/writing what you like, because then, if you have the talent and a bit of luck, the story should be inherently good, rather than try to force something.
Anway, this was a very poignant moment for Shujin and Mashiro, and I think Ohba and Obata pulled it off well. They couldn't just be flat out rejected cause then they'd probably have no hope. So, the story was good, but not too good. Oh, and that editor looked like a goober, but I guess he knows what he's talking about.
And the ending. Yeah, cute. Too bad Shujin doesn't get to sit next to his gal pal. Well, I guess Mashiro and Azuki are more the focus of the story anyway.
Chapter 8 was pretty good but i hate lovey stuff about the dumbest things...seriously if i was that guy i woulda been had her as my gf
Nice chapter. It was cool to see them not getting their dreams crushed by the editor, while at the same time not simply getting a free ride.
As for those who gripe about there not being enough action, I really have to say that you're reading the wrong series. :/
I'm pretty sure she's in a different class from the rest of them.
While reading I allways wondered if some gaijin ever tried to get published in WSJ
