I watched a few episodes and got bored. I generally like to watch all the way up to the anime's current ep then go to the manga. When does Gintama get good because what i watched was just weird and made no sense. Not to bash it but I would like to get into, it seems there migh be decent fights later on but should I stick with it or is it mainly a comedy style anime/manga?

It's mainly a comedy manga.

There're a few serious arcs (like the Benizakura arc), but they're in the minority.

That's disappointing to me at least. I know some people like comedy manga, I like comedy in my manga but not as a genre. I'll stick to Will Ferrel for my comedy needs :D

I'd say watch at least either up to the end up of Season 1 or up to the end of the Benizakura arc (Episode 61). If nothing else, I'd say watch it for the characters and how they interact with each other. Yes, it's mainly a comedy, but there's so much more that it has to offer and shouldn't be taken just at face value.

And yes, just like everyone here has probably said at one point in this thread, you definately stick with the anime until you have to transition your way into the manga. Luckily, chapters of the manga that take place after the anime ends are being scanlated by a really good group (forget their name at the moment) that are MILES above anyone who has wroked on the series before.
