FUNimation Entertainment, Toei Animation, Shueisha and Fuji Television Announce Online Simulcast of One Piece

FUNimation® Entertainment and the Japanese powerhouse consortium of producer Toei Animation Co., Ltd., publisher Shueisha, Inc. and broadcaster Fuji Television Network, Inc. have entered into an agreement giving the American anime leader exclusive rights to the U.S. and Canadian online simulcast of the studios' signature animated series One Piece.

Starting Saturday, May 30th at 9:00 p.m. CDT, just one hour after airing in Japan, FUNimation and the consortium will stream the first, free, professionally-produced, accurately English-subtitled One Piece series episode beginning with episode 403 via the official One Piece website www.onepieceofficial.com followed soon thereafter by FUNimation partner sites.

I hope they also air it on 720p or FHD

Seems that 391 is already on their site.

EDIT: And you can choose between English dub and subbed-Japanese. Episode 1 and 2 are out like this, but 391 is only subs.

Very interesting stuff. Isn't Funimation doing things like this for their other series? I know that they have subs for the current Fullmetal Alchemist out, though I don't know if they come out an hour after the airing. I guess this kind of thing could become a trend for the anime industry?

I don't think their subs for FMA come out until four days or so after the episode airs.

Well, the video quality for their FMA episodes is definitely higher than the One Piece episodes, or maybe it's just the computer... The time started to get more and more off as the video went on though. At any rate, I'll probably use this feature when there's a big episode that I want to see right away, or hear a new character's voice.

This is going to put me on an emotional high for the rest of the day. Holy shit, this is awesome news...

Anyone else get a laugh at the ANN report where it said that "Christopher R. Sabat as the swordsman Roronoa Zolo/Zoro." Why are they still calling him Zolo, that name should have died long ago, unless they're still airing cut episodes somewhere.

Does anyone know if Hulu or other streaming sites will pick up the streaming rights as well?

Since they said "FUNimation video partner sites" in the press release, I would assume that means it'll be on other websites. So Hulu is probably a likely bet.
