you're not whining are you
Meh, all this talk about Gear Second. I'll be fine if they maybe left it as "Second Gear" for the subtitles, but it would be slightly awkward with Luffy saying the number of the gear prior to the word "Gear". Think of the scene when Luffy was preparing for Gear Third before Blueno passed out. I know it's supposed to be obvious that it's another gear, but if he says "Third...", it'd just be awkward, but that's just me. They could go the route some were saying and possibly interchange the terms. Who knows how it'll all go down until we see it.
"Gia Sekando" is five syllables. I could see them adding in something else (like "Now Gum-Gum!" for "Gomu Gomu no") like "Go-ing Sec-ond-Gear" or something like that, not like that's a good example or anything :D
What I've always found funny about this lip flap thing is that they've so far done well with "Gomu Gomu no" into "Gum Gum". His lips aren't always on screen anyway.
Also, number of syllables doesn't equal number of times you open and close your mouth.
"Now Gum Gum" - 3 Syllables
"Go-mu Go-mu No" - 5 Syllables.
Still doesn't match entirely. But it works.
Nothing here for now.
4Kids would usually just stretch out Gum-Gum
Gummmmmmmmm-Gummmmmmmmmmmm BLAST!
Or make him say other stuff in addition to Gum-Gum to fit the flaps.
Or sometimes it just works out. It's not like the lip movement in One Piece is particularly detailed.
4kids likes to edit the animation to make the lip flaps match their dialogue.
Editing the dialogue to make it fit is stupid and lazy. REAL dubbing companies actually spend the time and effort to match the flaps without taking any shortcuts.
Something I've noticed, and I suppose we can chalk this up to Dragon Ball Kai, but we have yet to have a week with two episodes to upload. I'm curious how this might change in coming years, if FUNimation will make a big deal out of 'two new episodes this week!' or whatever.
Gah, I wish FUNi was simulcasting DBK!!
