American Manga Questions

I'm thinking about picking up the manga by Viz but I've got some questions about it first.
First off I've read every chapter on the MSN groups site so I know what's going on. It's just that it feels better to have a book in your hand then clicking the next button.

My first question.
How bad is the translation?
Second
Is it true they call him Zolo after a few volumes of calling him Zoro?
Third
How many volumes are out?

The Translations are alright... they keep the swears and every single deatail
Second
I think that they only call him Zollo in Shonen Jump Magazines. Because I have the english One-Piece Volume One and they call him Zoro

and Third
They have 6 volumes (in english) and volume 7 to come out in July.

They did at first but since (Volume 4 was it? or 5?) they began calling him Zolo and changing the reprints of Vol. 1-3 to Zolo.

The Viz comics do NOT contain every detail or swear but for a commercial release that must please all fans and still attempt to make a profit it is very good. I would still suggest you stick with online translation like the work of OP translator-extraordinaire stephen.

My Mistake. Well, the Viz version I have says Zoro.. And I guess they didn't have every deatail and swear. I'm just saying that it was kinda similar.

The Viz versions are okay... but OP translator is better.... A LOT

I don't care if Zoro is called Zolo, as long as all the violence is there and there's no bad puns or missing pages.

Only if you think companies trying to bring manga/animation to the US from Japan shouldn't attempt to make a profit.

It's not bad at all, really. For convenience, I prefer English versions, though the tankoubons can still be a good buy. The only problems I have are mainly with the fonts and some of the talk. Yeah, I know that's how pirates are supposed to talk, but I really think they could have done without it.

The US manga is alright. I buy it. Besides Zoro being Zolo, The Going Merry is Merry Go. They don't edit the art at all, but sometimes I find some of the dialogue a little cheesy...like someone actually said "curses!" at some point. :rolleyes: But it's not like watching the dub.

Well, they do edit the SFX, which can sometimes interfere with the art a little.

As far as puns, the viz puns tend to be the same or worse than the 4kids puns. Pussy willow walk is the worst attack name I've ever heard. >.>
However, there are no image edits besides the sound effects.

But I would wish that they use the jap sound effect since I think their the only one who still tranlation them beside CMX, but beside that I like Viz's One Piece.

I need to learn to read those sound effects...the Trigun manga leaves them untranslated, which is cool, but I can't understand them. :lol:

Well if so, I must have been pretty damn pissed off at something - I don't mind them, it's just in my opinion, to experience OP in it's fullest, the Japanese volumes are the best. Don't get me wrong. I originally got into OP after reading the viz manga, but it still has certain quailties about it that aren't 'pureist' I intended to recommend the original, not flame the current.

That's why I don't think translated SFX are bad. The Japanese would use something like "pikaaaaan," which makes no sense to me, while Viz would just use "boom."

Well, I would rather not read the VIZ/Shonen Jump versions because they tend to make them sound extremely cheezy, put in bad puns, and make EVERYONE into the typical American-stereotyped pirate (Yarr!!). XP

but....they talk like pirates speak in Japanese in the original. There may not say 'yargh' or 'shivver me timbers' but they do use the appropriate gang-style curses, addresses and calls.

Does "Yaroudomo" fit into that? I have no idea what that means but I hear it all the time.
