Hard not to agree with him.

Those prequels REALLY became ammo for Trekkies against Star Wars.

More so when their Star Trek movie came out recently and showed how to do a proper contemporary version of a sci fi franchise.

Hahahaha I am a hardcore fan of both Trek and Wars, just about equally.
Last year's Trek film blew SO MANY PEOPLE AWAY......see, the new trek movie was MADE to get folks back into Trek and make new fans of a new generation. The last three Star Wars films (I, II, and III) were made because George Lucas didn't feel like HIS story was told fully and that HE wanted them made the way HE wanted.

I can get behind his creative freedom as the creator of Star Wars for sure.

But man... he REALLY needs to leave directing to more able people.

I know it's HIS world and all but... when fan made movies and or games evoke more emotion and have a more polished look than the real deal, you KNOW something is up.

Funny thing about the Star Trek movie is that J.J. Abrams is a Star Wars guy and he NEVER liked the Star Trek series... he made the movie how a Star Wars fan would envision it...and it worked!

Well when Episode III came out, and parents of star wars kids under 13 the country over discovered that it was rated PG-13, they freaked out on George Lucas, and his answer was "Sorry, but what I put into this film I needed to put in it for the sake of telling my story."

In other words, "I don't care. I can make movies how I WANT MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Perhaps that was a tad cynical, but hey...

Episode III being PG-13 was the ONLY good thing to come out of the new Trilogy.

That and "Duel of the Fates"

The rating didn't make the movie. The original trilogy were all PGs and they were still awesomer by a HUGE margin.

Duel of the Fates = epic music. You notice its played in all three new movies at at least one point? Episode III, despite terrible acting and dialogue, was kinda fun to watch though...what with all the lightsaber fights and Ian McDiarmid's Emperor Palpatine owning everyone. That was cool.

PG back in 1977 was akin to the current PG today, hence the limb cutting and darker tones.

R rating back in 77 meant porn movies.

    Keep that in mind.

In 1984, explicit violence and gore in the films Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins caused an uproar among parents over their PG rating.[10][11] Their complaints led Hollywood figure Steven Spielberg, director of Temple of Doom and producer of Gremlins, to suggest a new rating to MPAA president Jack Valenti. Spielberg's suggestion was for an intermediate rating of PG-13 or PG-14.[12] On conferring with cinema owners, Valenti and the MPAA on July 1, 1984, introduced the PG-13 rating indicating that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
So I re-iterate, PG-13 was the best thing to happen to the NEW Trilogy.

We can only hope he wises up for the next movies.

Big-battle space opera was GRAND for a way to kick off a new franchise, but repeat that five times and the franchise dies again.

It wouldn't take much for the newer Trek movies to appear "deep". He doesn't have to go TOO far to raise science fiction questions/ethical concerns, but if he ignores it again I could foresee friction.

    Agree.

But at least he jump started the franchise rather well for the mainstream media.

He can go down the path of deep sequels now... since it seems Hollywood as a whole has learned how to do a proper Number 2.

    Nerds, answer my question!

I used to love Star Wars as a kid. I had a ton of the books, played TIE Fighter and Dark Forces on my computer, dreamed about the prequels and all that. Then I grew up and later on I watched like half of the Phantom Menace and just recently saw most of Revenge of the Sith, and they were both BALLSACK. However, I am a little bit intrigued by the Clone Wars series. I like the caricatured look and I feel like being in pure CG rather than a bastardized mix of CG-plus-an-actor's-face-photoshopped-into-the-frame like the movies probably lowers the "Lucas Quotient," which I define as "the irresistible urge to jam as much moving crap as you possibly can into the picture to distract the audience from the travesty of acting and dialogue taking place." Also, as much as I grew bored of the whole epic storyline thing, I always liked the universe of Star Wars and it seems like a long episodic series probably has some neat, contained stories about weird and cool settings and characters?

Are any of my hopes realized in this series, or is it just as dumb as the Star Wars prequels?

It's easily the best mainstream Star Wars currently available outside of books or games.

And yes... the new trilogy blew chunks =\

We have a thread here in AP that needs love for that game.

Seriously, it's looking amazing and the lack of hype here is killing me.
