Ugh...I know Oda's kinda dropped the ball with Nami as of late (although her fights are less of a joke than they used to be, at least), but I think giving it to Roger over her would be entirely too cruel. Nami is an actual character, an active participant in the events of the plot, however iffy some of her characterization may be. Roger's admittedly badass, but we can't really call him a character in the narrative sense. He's a plot device, an instrument for suspense; we don't REALLY know anything about him except for the myopic, one-sided, or vague accounts of his exploits from secondary/tertiary sources. For all we know he dropkicked puppies for fun whenever he wasn't on-panel. To prop him up as a better CHARACTER than Nami is not only a bit too harsh, but not all that accurate in the technical sense, either.

Nami's shrillness is fine with me, I don't think she's shrill to the point of annoyance and it's very refreshing to see her sass overstimulated idiots (understand that I say that lovingly) like Luffy and Usopp back to reality when they get too hopped up on dreams and adventure. (I realize this is One Piece we're talking about here, but there has to be SOME kind of rational moderating element, or it loses all emotional impact!) The feigned helplessness during fights doesn't really work for me, though, it seems more like residual sexism from modern shonen institutions than it does a cute character quirk. I don't really think she needs to be able to fight to be competent even in a kids' fight comic, but it would be nice if Oda would get a bit more into her initial strength from earlier in the comic, which was her semi-criminal business sense. She was a bit more of a no-nonsense den mother early on in terms of how she managed the crew's assets and at least TRIED to rein in their stupider impulses, but she's kinda been mostly set dressing since Water 7; we don't really see her running around trying to keep the crew on task and in the financial black much anymore. As a result, you have the gag-heavy maniacs like Franky and Brook running rampant and they come to kind of dominate the discourse. She needs to start sassing more people than Luffy, or she'll end up a lot more ineffectual than before Oda let her fight.

But even with that said, I can't endorse Roger. That's just a little too dumb.

As for her weather power, there's a lot of potential there. Glad to see Nami's repping as a lightning mage; hopefully after her stint in the Hyperbolic Weather Chamber we'll get to see her start blasting away cannon fodder with lightning bolts without so much squealing.

Nami joined Luffy to steal from him, once that was done through and he saved her ass, she has been loyal to him...However joke or not she is still treating all the cash SH get like her own.
I realise its suppose to be a joke but to me thats just some fracked up chain of command. And when she is bossing around and alike its nothing different.

The way I see it, Nami's bossiness + money-grubbing is the most important duty on the ship, hands-down. If she left anyone else in charge of the money, Luffy would probably get into it due to a weakened protective instinct. If she let Luffy anywhere near it, they'd die a gruesome death of starvation and scurvy out in the middle of the ocean after Luffy finished eating all the meat he bought with it. And of course between Zoro running off to fight anybody with a sword and getting lost, Chopper being a furry little six-year-old who can't swim, Usopp blundering into trouble, and Luffy charging off anytime he hears the word "adventure", Nami's essentially managing a superpowered kindergarten. She needs to be shrill with these people or they're all going to go nuts, go do their own thing, and get whomped by the first random Logia user they run into. Somebody needs to talk them down to at least some degree or they're going to go charging off a cliff. It's not easy keeping a misfit, easily distracted bunch like Luffy and pals on task, and I think when Oda actually bothers to write her as a moderating influence, her personality is well-suited to that unenviable task. (Would you REALLY want to live with Luffy, day and night? Keep him from eating everything in sight? Pulling him out of the sea every time he went for an involuntary swim because he dropped a kebab overboard? Be constantly awakened from your sleep every time he has a dream about punching out a monkey? Put up with his SMELL? This is a guy who wears the same outfit for hundreds of chapters and eats pretty much nothing but meat; he probably smells like the inside of your sock on a GOOD day! It's little wonder Nami is so exasperated with him!)

Nami's kinda like Fujiko with a conscience; she's certainly self-interested enough for several people, but she knows quite well where to draw the line. But thankfully she's still amoral enough to keep things interesting (much like Fujiko there as well). She needs some work, but I think it's too much the "easy way out" to say "well, Nami had her chance, let's give it to the Pirate King because he's never really had to validate himself as a character." He's just too perfect. I don't like it.

I guess I'm one of the few people who actually enjoys Nami keeping the idiots in line.

And damn if they don't DESERVE it. The dumb antics of the crew can be funny at times but let's face it, if they constasntly went on unchecked it would get unbearabley irritating. Nami is the steadfast straight man and as such it's her reactions to them that make the comedy work. And maybe I'm too black-hearted, but personally speaking it can be pretty damn satisfying. Luffy acts stupid and endangers lives? Hell YEAH Nami should smack him.

For those of us with lower levels of tolerance for idiocy she provides catharsis.
