So... yeah.

Nickelodeon just bought Ninja Turtles.

All of it. All the comics, the backstock, the series and movies rights. All of it.

I guess Laird finally had enough and wanted to retire, after 25 years. (Eastman sold his share years ago.)

Well, that explains why the comic creator blogs were taken off the official website over the weekend.

For the most part, this doesn't bother me, because Mirage hasn't done anything really worthwhile with the property in years, I have all the old stuff, I hate the teams they've had on the comic for over a decade now, and the current show has sucked for a couple years now, and getting it out of 4Kids hands is only for the good.

UPDATE: Mirage retains the right to publish 18 issues of TMNT comics a year. So any stories currently going or that they desire to do, should still come out without any problems.

On the other hand, Nickelodeon hasn't impressed me with anything in years, save Avatar: The Last Airbender (dearGOD I hate that sponge). And they're focusing on a lot of those Live Action shows....

I think the last time I read the turtles comic was the image b & w stuff, and that was a good long while ago, so...can't really say I'm torn up about this.

Agreed fully. TMNT has never had justice in the main stream media. It always pops up in 5 year cycles. I think what this means is that TMNT will never get out of the whoring business, nickelodeon is a harsh pimp.

Even if Nick doesn't do anything with the franchise, it still benefits them to hold on to the property.

This is because Mirage, through association with 4Kids Entertainment, was licensing the TMNT 2003 show and all related properties to Time Warner. As many know, the 2003 show was very popular and it's been a staple show for both what was formerly Kids WB and on Cartoon Network.

Viacom taking control guarantees that even if more episodes of the 2003 series gets produced, they're not going on the 4Kids network or on CN. So Time Warner hemorrhages even further in the ratings than it was before; it's already third place behind Viacom and Disney as-is.

Also, CG turtles is a do-not-want. Most of the CG cartoons on now are GOD-AWFUL, it horrifies me that the legacy of Mainframe Entertainment could be so horribly pissed on by such monstrosities on Nick and CN.

Apparently they want the new series to be in the same vein as the 80's show. I hope they get James Avery to be the voice of Shredder again.
