Franky vs. Paulie II: REVOTED~!

I am always the one who screams that we shouldn't say "this" or "that" will happen and I'm not about to break my own policy.

Rather than a list of why Franky MUST join, this is a list of highly suspicious clues that are likely to result in Franky joining but it is true that ANYTHING could happen here. And boy do I mean anything.

Oda threw us for a loop last time, he rarely pulls the same trick twice (in a row at least)

Franky's VA is suspiciously highly popular with fans since his work as Jango and Bon Kurei.

In recent months Franky has been given an incredibly detailed history and a personality that grows stronger by the moment. It is very true that the same happened with Vivi as well though...

Franky has most recently been given a huge list of attacks. A very good sign.

Paulie is by no means a weak character in terms of strength or character, but he still seems somewhat plain as compared to Franky who is supposedly a rejected shipwright, his ability, despite a heavy learning curve for his place, seems to rival that of the only other shipwright taken in by the master Tom.

In relation to the last statement, we all know crew members have dreams, and Franky has already stated his. Most recently a clue from SBS would inidcate Paulie's dream was to become a great shipwright and he has already accomplished that. I'm not saying he couldn't have something else, but as it stands right now, Paulie is living his dream while Franky is working towards it.

Paulie seems to be creeping more and more towards the likes of a Wiper, a character who has a great reason to fight and can stand up for themselves, but in the presence of truly extraordinary individuals such as Luffy and dare I say Franky, seems somewhat dull.

Franky is super powerful but has two major weakness, a plus for Mugiwara Luffy crew members. If he was suited to be a background character, Oda could easily have given him the cola weakness and left it at that (similar to Wiper and the Reject) but two weakness gives Oda MANY wonderful opportunities to disable Franky or put him in danger later on.





Now, according to the above, which are merely observations, logic dictates that Franky has an excellent chance at being the next member. However, the most important thing to remember is, LOGIC DOESN'T MATTER HERE ^O^ In my opinion, it seems like Franky is in however OP sure as hell isn't up to me. I'm just as excited either way and I would love to be proven entirely wrong if by Oda sensei.

Omae, what you said about the cola running out made me think of Spiderman comcs. You know, where Spiderman has the perfect shot to nail the bad guy with a web blast, but then finds out he's out of web fluid.

So Franky is about to do a super-cool attack but it fizzles suddenly because his cola ran out. That would crack me up.

well if franky joins...as i have been seeing the raw episdoes..i DO agree that he does sound like bon clay at some pts...and if bon clay is the alabasta character who joins the crew, then there will be confusion and problems b/c they both have the same voice actor and sound somewhat similar

"Strong right" or "Pipe hitch knives" i think that the two fighters should be judge for what they can offer the crew. i think they'll both be put on the crew Franky is a musician (he has a gutiar and tried to make that song for Ussop) and Paulie is a shipwright, so they are probably gonna both be put on

For me, I'm still having major issues connecting with Pauly on a number of levels. I was hoping last time that he'd have more exposure, more development in the coming chapters, and yeh, he has had some fleeting moments, but that's all they were, fleeting. But, 20-30 chapters on still nothing, I feel no real strong connection to his character at all, which worries me a lot, because he does have a very good chance of joining the crew.

Ever since Rocket Man got on the tracks, it seems like Pauly has faded out of the bigger picture, he's sort of been relegated to a minor or a less significant role, whereas he started out as such a major player. Also I think having such a large clutter of characters on RM has hurt him a bit.

That's my opinion of him at this stage, though that's not to say he won't be more prominent in later chapters, in which surely will. But overall as a reader, at this point, I personally don't have enough reasons to believe that this guy will be the next crew member.

He's a good shipwright, also have an interesting combat style...

I don't think anyone meant that. It's simply that people complain about Franky's fighting style being boring or predictable, but as long as he's good, it doesn't matter if he fights with Usopp/Krieg attacks or something never seen before, like a Zoan guitar or anything.

And whether he's very strong or not, yeah, Pauly has good chances. It's just that I kind of think Usopp, Chopper, and Nami fill the "not-quite-a-fighter" roles already, if that's where he'd go.

From these 2 choices I think Pauley will join, but I won't mind if Franky will join.

Franky will join , pauli will join too, the franky familly has no obligation to stay at water seven, they only go where franky go and they already have a bond with luffy so if luffy ask franky to join the franky will join too and that would not disturb luffy at all.
For pauli he is already with the strawhats , as long as he fight against the governement he will be classified as a pirate , so i see nothing that can stop those two guys to join.
For those who think that franky will stay at water seven and only create the ship like tom did for gold roger , remember that franky IS NOT tom and that the characters in one piece don't have to follow their parent steps , the only one who has done that so far is chopper and maybe robin , the others have their own goals and their own dreams.

It has always been that Luffy's crew members are not consider the "best". Chopper wasn't the best doctor, but he studied under the best. Sanji wasn't the best chef but he studied under the best. Usopp wasn't the greatest dead-eye nor the bravest soul, but he's the son of what may very well be a brave and fearsome dead-eye. Luffy dreams of becoming a pirate even better than Shanks. Nami wants to do something that's never been done by mapping the world and becoming the best cartographer. And Robin we simply do not know.


Franky studied under the best shipwright and Franky himself is unquestionably a shipwright. His methods are quite 'unique', but so are each and every crew member's methods in their respective fields. They are not ordinary, they're extraordinary in their means which makes them different and better than anyone else. Thus far Franky has shown all these qualities. If Paulie has any of these, he's yet to show any besides his tough spirit, but as I said earlier, even Wiper had a tough spirit, as did Khoza, Dalton, Dorry & Brogey, Gen, Gin & Budol.

UPRC makes a very good point, you don't HAVE to be insanely powerful to be a member of the crew. I mean, it would be a little redundant. Why do we love it when Usopp fights? Because he's not insanely powerful and thus it's that much more dramatic to see how he will win.

Anyhow, here again is a much-argued opinion:

I personally think Paulie will join. Yes, Franky is a KICK-ASS character, and his fighting style is terrific. Compared to Franky, Paulie falls a little short in the fighting category. Other than that, I'm not going to list Paulie's good points, everybody's pointed them out already. In a nutshell, he's wacky yet not over the top and has great potential for crew dynamic.

However, I do think Oda has another motive for making Franky so freaking cool. As far as we know currently, the Merry is dead. *taps* So we need a new ship, and Oda seems to be setting Franky up to follow in Tom's footsteps and make the flagship of the Pirate King. However, considering how much we all loved the Merry, just throwing in a new ship would be kind of lame. BUT if the ship is made by a character we all love (and c'mon, who doesn't love Franky) then we can take all the love we have for that character and apply it to the ship. In a way it would be like a part of Franky is going with the crew when they leave.

Also, I don't see a lot of room for Franky to grow. he's a lot older than the Straw Hats, even more than Robin. True, age shouldn't matter, but he's pretty damn settled in Water Seven. And he can't leave the Franky Family, they would be devastated. And he wants to build a "Dream Ship", and let's be honest there's probably no better place than Water Seven to do it.

I know people's complaints about Paulie, but . . . the arc is far from over. We should know to never underestimate Oda in these things. A few chapters down the line and he may show that Paulie is truly KICK ASS. He could throw in a heart-rendering flash back, or make him do something insanely cool with his Rope Action. I leave it all in the hands of Oda . . . .

I would have to say the chances for a flashback for Paulie are slim to none considering we've already had Franky's and Robin's is going to be creeping up before we know it. I'm not saying that doesn't mean he can't join, but I think the possibility of him having a flashback all to himself are quite low.

We have to understand that Luffy don't need to be surronded by storng crews so a crewmember don't need a power that can destory the uinverse, so I'll cast my lot on Franky. He may be storng but he is not storng enough to destory everything.

I use to hate Franky, but ever since the incident in warehouse and the PT, Franky grew out on me, he fits to be in a Straw Hat crew.

Franky is quirky and funny, he also have a flashback. Oda is determinted to have him follow Tom's footstep, there are many edvent that Franky will join. Oda has shown that the chance for Franky to join as a shipwight is high.

I would also say that is a possibility as it is something Oda has never done before either. However, Luffy comitted to getting a shipwright and his whims usually end up becoming reality. A shipwright will join, but the possibility exists that it will be neither Franky nor Paulie.

Well, I'm not sure I'd say that it's slim to none... remember when Usopp's "flashback" took place. For all we know, we might not see Paulie's until after the arc ends, or close to the end. Oda has to have something in mind for him, something to explain why he's so loyal to Iceburg, and hopefully why he's such a prude and so bad with money. I don't think he'd throw those out there and then not explain them.

But then, maybe he would. I just think that there's something more to Paulie than we've seen so far.

Now, personally I think Franky is going to be the one to join, just because of the character exposition he's been given (its been examined enough I dont need to repeat it)

But i think it would be neat, partly because the character has made its appearance "twice" that the Klaubertmann (sp?) of the Going Mary that has manifested itself could potentially be a contender for a surprise addition ala Nico Robin.

Think about it... all legends regarding Klaubertmann aside, this is a character that has a deep connection to the crew already, inspite of very few appearances, and being a ship spirit, who would know ships better? If the Klaubertmann has manifested itself physically to repair the ship before what's to say that it can't become a real shipwright for the crew? obviously it would have to have some very personal dream that it could chase, just like the rest of the crew, but Oda, being the brilliant person that he is could probably come up with something..

Granted the more I think about it the harder it seems to justify, but it's a neat idea none the less...
