Wouldn't it be easier to add (in the forum config) under the profile and our information the standar Mars Venus signs, and whoever wants to be identified by it's gender sets the apropiate radiobutton?

Nah. that would take coding. And thats an easy copout cheat sheet. With this method, you get the one time akward question "are you a guy or a girl?" out of the way and thats it, but then you have to get to know the user and remember that fact.
