I love you for mentioning Modest Mouse, Portishead and Röyksopp.

Frank Zappa, John Frusciante!!! Even Mark Lanegan!! The National!
this thread reeks of excellent music!!
I listen to a variety of bands and genres, be it in Spanish, English, Japanese, even some French. I like acoustic works of almost any kind, progressive and experimental rock, alternative rock, funk, roots, jazz, and world music.
Some that I can remember right now are John Frusciante, The Doors, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Zappa, RHCP, Muse, Tokyo Police Club, Delta Spirit, Incubus, Mars Volta, Phish, David Bowie, Radiohead, Blood Sweat and Tears, The Pillows, Scoobie Do, Beirut, Delgados, Bajo Fondo, Kadeho, Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati, Andrés Calamaro, Perro Zompopo, Capmany, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Fabulosos Cadillacs, El Parque, Malpaís, Manu Chao, Enrique Bunbury, Evolucion, Parque en el espacio, Cafe Tacvba and many others.
I really need to make an lastfm account!
Interesting topic guys. I have eclectic tastes in music: rock in various styles, techno, new wave, new rave, hip hop, bossa nova, pop, drum and bass, (pop music really, no strange things like Jonas Brothers and / or similar XD), music of the 60s, 70s, 80s ... etc. The truth always try to be open to different styles and I like discovering styles, songs and new bands.
Then I'll post more, greetings to all =)
I think I'm getting back into a steady music discovery schedule. I've finally gotten around to listening to the Chameleons and A Place to Bury Strangers, have 4-5 other albums ready to go on my computer and at least seven in line to download, all of this in addition to an album of the day music blog. It's nice for getting a good spread of music, though I want to find a genre to really delve into and get on top of. Maybe I'll start listening more deeply into post-punk and noise rock. You can never have enough of those.
I'm also excited since one of my first college courses is jazz history. I never looked far enough into jazz, either. I listen to the classics (Coltrane, Davis, Brubeck, Minus, Monk, Corea, etc...), a few lesser mentioned essentials (Blakey, Dolphy, Sun Ra, etc..) and some random obscure artists (Bohren & der Club of Gore, Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson, Peter Brötzmann, etc...), but haven't explored enough early jazz and don't have much of a background for it or knowledge of its culture.
I'm hella bumping this for something that fits here:
As I've implied in a few specific posts, I've been working at the radio station since arriving at college. Tonight, though, marks the start of my first official show! It's called Nasal Retentive Calliope Music, on from 12-2AM EST and it spans many different genres. It mostly boils down to me playing whatever I feel like, but it should be pretty fun. I've got some interesting things lined up for my premier, from Frank Zappa to Moss Icon to Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Tune in!
Just a little shameless self-promotion, haha.
I like mainly punk rock and any type of club music (as in, techno, trance, electronica, the like. My love of that genre came from about four years of playing Dance Dance Revolution). I can't stand oldies and country music (especially Taylor Swift because she reminds of somebody I really hate), Paramore (Probably because they did a song or two for Twilight, and I abosolutely hate that book/movie saga), and Evanescence (Don't know why). Anyway, here's my favorite bands
Flogging Molly
Barenaked Ladies
Ludo
Fall Out Boy
Polysics
Dir en Grey
Miyavi
Switchfoot
Lady Gaga (for some weird reason, i'm the only one in my family who isn't scared of her)
Panic! At the Disco
The Dropkick Murphys

lol, what punk rock do you listen to.
green day, blink 182, and good charlotte am i right or am i right
I'm in a good mood.
post punk ftw....
I'm into most things, but my metal-oriented friends have had a big influence on me in the last few years.
Just a few of my favorite artists:
Frank Zappa
System of a Down
Five Finger Death Punch
Iron Maiden
Halifax
Blue Oyster Cult
And of course, I'm a diehard fan of The Beatles (own all their albums).
Hip Hop of all stripes and kinds.
I'm picky with rock, though I generally love most stuff made between 1977 and 1983 or so. The golden era of punk, post-punk, and new wave.
Also Billy Joel and U2.
my favorite musician is a guy you've never heard of he is real obscure
he played the guqin back in pre-history, his name is up to interpretation but I prefer to not call him anything since it keeps him pure
we don't know what he really sounded like but his corpse was dressed up gnarly ill he was probably homeless, it's like found
yeah i like to some pretty indie shit![]()
I listen exclusively to Hazara space power pop post-rock.
Only noticed this thread now.
I'm a pretty straight forward and open person when it comes to music.
I don't care what the genre is, I don't care what band it is, I don't care how over rated, under rated it is, as long as the song itself has some nice/catchy melody to it. The singer can be gay, the singer can be high, the singer can be low, the singer can be screaming, whatever, as long as it has a nice melody I can listen to without getting bored or annoyed.
Which excludes pretty much all the Rap and Country music I've heard.
I've been wanting to get into rap for years, but I really don't know who to start with.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm ticked off because I'm searching everywhere for this CD in my house but I can't find it

Also, I like that guy that Gigglepuffy is talking about.
*new signature in consideration
A Tribe Called Quest.
And if you feel up for some hardcore material, Wu Tang Clan.
Post any and all questions in the Hip Hop Thread, I will answer them all.
If you listen to things for melody no wonder you can't get into rap. It's about rhythm.Originally Posted by SGRaaize
