He made a promise to Ace to look after Luffy. Actually, I suppose that isn't entirely true. Still, Jimbei did say he's only do such a thing if he respected the person and it's clear that he grew to respect Luffy greatly.

He obviously has some sort of tragic past, having had previously been a member of a pirate crew made up entirely of escaped slaves.

I know it isn't much, but it's more than any character has so far and definitely more than Hancock who was probably too strong to be a part of the crew anyway. Even after the timeskip.

for what it's worth though I do think Luffy and Hancock are gonna eventually end up together at the very end of the series. I doubt it would be outright shown though.

Not really. Sandersonia said that Sunny Pirates weren't necessarily former slaves. I doubt Hachan was one, along with Kuroobi and Chew (if you think he was with Hachan and Kuroobi in that flashback). If they were it'd probably only be a short period of time. Many of them might have joined the Sunny pirates because their siblings/parents/children/friends might have been taken as slaves. Or maybe they just thought it was cool - look at the Macro pirates, they're former Sunny Pirates who now are in the slave trading themselves when it's against everything Fisher Tiger was for.

I don't see Jinbei joining simply because he doesn't seem to have the potential to grow as a character, though that might change once we get to see more of him.

It has little to do with slavery.
They were still Fishmen who grew up surrounded by harsh prejudices and outright hatred of them for being who they were.

What do you think about Crocodile's redemption?

Does it really count as an actual redemption? Sure he saved Luffy and helped the WB pirates but I fail to see how that makes him less of a bastard. We don't know his motivations for doing that, maybe he just really really hates the WG and would do anything to piss them off, not likely but it serves as an example. Then again I have yet to read through the war arc again, maybe I missed something, if so could you point me to it?

On another note I really don't see Jimbei joining, I'm not exactly sure why but I just can't picture it. Perhaps it's that he was introduced in the war arc (I count ID as part of the overall war arc) and and that arc ended and Jimbei left and Luffy didn't even hint at wanting him to become his nakama. Or perhaps it's that when they parted Jimbei said he looked forward to Luffy meeting him at fishman island and I can't seem to find any subtext that goes 'oh and when we meet again then I'll join your crew and sail off with you'. Or perhaps it's just that I really can't see his personality fitting in with the rest of the crew. Whatever the reason I think it's more likely that a completely new character will join that anyone we have met so far.

The last couple of pages made me realise... Pell wasn't killed so that Croc would be redeemable. It's laughable for Arlong to be redeemed after what he did, but because Croc didn't kill a character people cared about, it's a bit more believable. Amusing!

because Arlong will be the leader of a rebel group to free the fishman island from the pirates, as it is now a noman's land since WB's death. Luffy will free them and declare this island is territory (aka WB) then arlong will join SH's.

Truly forget Arlong. For now there is only Jimbei... We will see who might be a candidate in Fishmen island.
