I kind of figured if I left this thread a few days people would stop talking about dicks........should've figured that was a bit too naive on my part.

Roderick is a badass for slapping Griffith. He's lucky to have not been in the Eclipse.

Guess Rickert is the captain now....though he doesn't look like a somali pirate to me.

Well they're already up to the Eclipse and have most of the pieces of Caska's mind, I'd think they could wrap this part up in fairly short order at this point.

This has honestly been more tame than I expected. Kinda disappointing. I guess Miura doesn't have it in him anymore to write and draw an Eclipse level event.

I wish he'd felt this way 30 years ago.

The raw horror and brutality of Berserk is part of what made it good, but it just went too damn far sometimes. Same problem with GoT. You can imply horrific messed up things without showing it explicitly.

Totally disagree on a fundamental level. This mentality (It's too graphic to be shown) just makes stories blander (Unless, for GoT, you're talking Sansa's scene which was totally out of place and didn't serve any good purpose other than 'shock'). Still, sometimes, I want a story to punch me in the face with everything it's got. Early Berserk (the leadup to and the eclipse) is exactly that, and that is part of what makes it endure as one of the best manga of all time. It had an Oompff to it, a weight. Implying it wouldn't have been as powerful... but showing it? Brutal, unapologetic scarring of the reader to really drive home how evil and horrible what's going on is.

I don't need to see a wolf's muzzle getting chopped off in gorey detail, I don't need to see Gaston's eyeballs, brains and teeth popping out, and I don't need to see the flayed flesh on Griffith. The eclipse needed to be as bad as it was, because it was THE ECLIPSE, the ultimate pinnacle of every possible bad and horrible thing. And the world needs to be dirty, sure The grit and palpable danger and constant death makes it interesting. But an over the top blood spray works just as well as seeing actual brain matter.

But you can tell me "insert horrific imagery here" and my brain will do well enough. (I saw the animated version long before the manga and I get the exact same story experience, even with it toned down) I don't need to actually see it in detail to know extremely bad things are happening. The story is MORE mature now that it doesn't rely on pure shock value, not less.

WHy I had to stop watching GoT. They kept trying to top themselves until they eventually just started doing straight up torture porn and it was too much.

Did having demonic horse possession rape with full genitalia REALLY add that much to the story? Especially immediately following the Eclipse? Sure, the first time it makes you say "holy shit what is happening here? I can't believe he's going there!" and that is certainly the desired effect and makes for an experience (and sometimes a gut churning one) but then later you just go "wow, that's stupid. Why was that there?" or "eww, i dont want to look at this." and it just takes you out of the scene. Shock value only works for a scene once. How much does it work after the first time is important too. Is the scene still shocking, or is it just unappealing?

Berserk had to be super brutal to be Berserk and get its reputation and be what it is. But it could have made due at like, 98% the level it went to, and the story and the art and mood would have still made it the same. Just a smidge less. And... it's already had the most awful terrible evil nasty event possible. Doesn't it actually dilute that some if we're constantly barraged with horrors that are just as bad? Yeah, throw somthing in ocassionally to show the world is still bad, but you don't need to be constant nonstop about it.

And I really don't see why, when revisiting THE ECLIPSE, there is any reason we should need to see THE ECLIPSE in all its horror again. We've been there, done that, it was shocking and sickening... and we don't need it repeated in a dream sequence. Especially one that is about *recovering* from said horror.

It's more or less the reason why Wyald got cut from both adaptations. He serves no purpose other than to kill and rape up a storm to sledgehammer you with how dark and horrible everything is.

Gore, horror, and terrible things have a time and a place and "all the time, everywhere" isn't good for making people care about your work.
Else you just get Gantz. and no one wants to be Gantz

I'm with Robby on this one.

I remember first watching the Eclipse, back in '03, after Media Blasters released the last DVD of the Berserk TV series.

I remember rushing home to see what would happen to Guts, Caska, the Band of the Hawk, and of course, Griffith. And like watching End of Evangelion, it was definitely an unforgettable moment for me, that stands out against all media (certainly anime) that I watched from that point on. It's still a "man, that was some shit," event, all these years later.

I don't need another Eclipse-like event. The Eclipse was "the Eclipse." It will always be "the Eclipse." Back in '03? That was seismic. Now? ...I dunno.
The point of it was to show how twisted Griffith's ambition was. And that point has been made.

What purpose would more unspeakably brutal extended scenes of raped dismembered pregnant women serve, now that Falconia exists?

And violence is a part of Berserk, it's true. I still remember the rush I felt when I started reading through Dark Horse's Berserk volumes, and much like with Blade of the Immortal before it, being blown away by how different Berserk was from all the other comics going. Horrific, tragic, brutal, and raw, but deeply affecting & beautiful. At times though, that shock and awe gave way to pure revulsion. So these things exist in contrast in Berserk's world, and are a part of what gives it such depth & interest. Guts' struggle to find purpose and meaning and yes--survive--is compelling in large part because of his overwhelmingly violent world.

But the over the top brutality isn't all that Berserk is, or even was. So I'm comfortable with it exploring different things as well, at this point.

I guess for me, bottom line is: I don't think Berserk needs to be as brutal as it was back then to tell its best story.
I'm 100% fine with Kentaro Miura apparently feeling the same way.
