I still haven't finished watching the first episodes of this show.
And now I'm not sure if I should.Spoiler:

Well, that's some fanfic there.
The end of the show IS dissapointing because it rushes the last bit. But it delivers pretty well with the villains. Get through to the end so you can at least be bothered by whats actually there (and what isn't) rather than a fan theory.
I look forward to Commander Bumi in season 2

So, halfway through my Airbender Rewatch, and have to say...
KATARA IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST. I always thought that I was just annoyed with her character type, but she's really just the worst written of the crew. She powers up too quickly, rarely struggles for an extended time, is always right, and still ends up right the few times she's wrong.
The few positives that she has--tough female character with good bending skill--are performed much more ably by Toph.
She's Avatar Britta.
i like brook he gives me a bone-er haha skull joke
I don't remember disliking Katara at all tbch. She was always sort of the voice of reason and trusthworthy "captian" for me, and that's a quality I related strongly to.
... I liked Katara. Only thing that I was annoyed with was her fast level-up that took like half an Episode.
But ok, I also love Britta as my favorite Community character, so.
There's no real struggle for Katara. Sokka deals with powerlessness, Aang with being the Avatar and Appa's loss, Toph with her perception of herself and from others...
For Katara, she has an episode where Aang might be better at water-bending, or where she can't learn water-bending from a master because she's a girl, and the problem is resolved in twenty-two minutes both times (with Katara victorious).
I guess it's the same reason I always preferred Neville to Harry Potter.
I always forgive all of Katara's problems, because I like to view it as one long set up for the amazing punch line that is Ember Island Players.
Really though, I am able to forgive her for the Water Bending simply because we saw her training at some points, so I assume she was training off screen. That way she was pretty good once she got to the North Pole. Once she finally had a master, I don't have that difficult of a time believing she very quickly mastered the art.
Also, there were some very obvious time lapses during her training in the North.
Katara never really wasted much time goofing off. To me, her "struggle" or whateverthatissupposedtobeSOimportantinacharacter, was the fact that she had to constantly stay at the top of her game, so that way she and her friends would have little to no trouble fending off thier pursuers < That was basically 90% of the adventure in the original series in fact. And it sort of ties in with other character dynamics too, as Sokka was always below at his game, and Aang was usually cocky and not tactical.
and let's all not forget her running mother-complex and how she wanted revenge and finally got it in season 3. Well kinda, as she found out, she can't kill others.
Wasn't this her struggle-that-makes-a-character-grow-as-a-character?
