    Default Sexy Frills

    I can't believe I'm doing this. I'm incredibly bored.

    Yes, we'll go with that.

When I prepared to go to Sakura-con this last April, it was with the knowledge that I would for one of the days be dragging along some children that may be greatly confused by the entire thing.

So I confused them more by dressing them up in cosplay.

In about two months, I had crocheted a Luffy Unlimited Adventure vest for my niece of which I am particularly proud.

    Unlimited Adventure Vest:
    Hidden:
Now I'm crocheting another Luffy vest. The infamous "sexy frills" vest from Amazon Lily.

And since I'm much better, can create a tighter weave, can keep the ends of my rows consistent, have learned from the mistakes of the first vest, and am just plain bored, I'll walk people through it.

    Instructions:
    Hidden:
I made my first booboo on this particular project by not measuring my niece ahead of time, and it ended up being much wider than it really should have been. After pulling everything out to restart, I started much smaller.

If you want to follow along or make a similar vest or shirt, MEASURE YOURSELF OR YOUR VICTIM FIRST.

The following may not make much sense to those that don't know how to crochet.

I am using an H/8-5.00mm needle for this with 4 worsted yarn.

As long as all the yarn you use is the same worst type, they shouldn't fray each other. Brands don't matter, but I highly suggest that you do NOT use Lion Brand unless it is their Pound of Love stuff. Much softer, and nicer on the fingertips.

Usually, I might tell you to make 50 or 60 or whatever chains first, but I didn't actually count since I pulled everything out. But honestly, that hardly matters with a piece like this. The length of this first row of chains should be a few inches longer than his/her diameter to allow for any shrinking from the ensuing rows and to allow for an overlap of the vest.

Next up, you need to be incredibly patient as you do ONLY single crochet rows.

This may take twenty or thirty rows depending on how big your dummy is.

If you have your dummy available often, test it on them, and wrap it around their waist to see how far along you have to go until the length is a few inches short of the armpit. It's okay to have a large gap between where you stop and the armpit - you will be able to fix this later after finishing the rest of these steps. (hint: don't try to do this now)

DO NOT keep adding rows up to the very bottom of their pits. It won't be a comfortable fit whatsoever. In fact, it may not fit at all.

Once it's at the appropriate length, fold the piece in half, and turn as if you're going to make the next row. With the piece still in half, continue the single stitch until you're half way through the fold.

DO NOT STITCH THE FOLD TOGETHER. You're simply eyeballing where the middle of the fold is.

Now turn to make a new row when you reach the middle.

For my niece, who is small, I only went up about five rows before I began to make the V-shape for Luffy's vest. You may want to make even more rows if you're making this for someone much bigger. For a small child, five rows should suffice though.

To make Luffy's V-shaped collar, you must SKIP that last stitch on the end of the row. Look in the example to see the stitch I am skipping.

Now turn to make the next row as if that last stitch doesn't exist. As you turn to make the next row, your end should look like little steps like this:

You'll continue to make little steps like these.

I made ten such steps for my niece before stopping. For her, this was the sufficient length from the middle of her chest to her shoulders.

If you're making this for someone larger, you may have to stop making those steps at around the point where it passes their collarbone, but continue to build rows on top up to the top of their shoulders.

In fact, make notes on how many rows you made, and keep track of how many steps you have.

In any case, when you reach their shoulders, STOP.

Take a deep breath, and cut it loose. DO NOT make the length of this end too short. In fact, it can't be long enough sometimes. Make it about 6 to 10 inches long.

Now forget about it after pulling the yarn all the way through the stitch.

Don't worry, it knows how to stay.

DO NOT MAKE A KNOT. That will eventually ruin the vest. Just don't do it.

Now fold the piece in half again like you did last time. Start another row from the half point on the other side.

To help make your vest look consistent, DO NOT start a row from the edge. Start in the middle. You can easily see the middle now, because you stopped there on the other side.

Now, just go back to follow the instructions I gave for the first flap you did. If you took notes, follow those.

Except, yanno in reverse since this is the other side of the vest, and you want that V-shape.

    ...

So now, you're done with those two front flaps. Cut the second one loose.

You should have four loose ends at this point.

The first loose end from the VERY BEGINNING.
The loose end from the first flap.
The beginning loose from the second flap.
And the one you just cut from the second flap.

    Continue to ignore them.

At this point, you may be confused about how to make the back flap.

First, I must tell you this. There are right handed people and there are left handed people.

RIGHT handed people do things in a RIGHT handed way.

And there are LEFT handed people that do things in a RIGHT handed way because their parents are dicks - or their aunts didn't know that their niece was left handed and taught them to crochet as if they were right handed.

HOWEVER. There ARE left handed ways to crochet.

So think about whether you use right or left handed crochet before finding the point where to start.

If you use right handed crochet, the first flap you made should be at your right hand.

If you use left handed crochet, the first flap should be at your left hand.

Now start a row in that gap between the flaps. Continue to make single stitch rows, and remember to keep the edges consistent for this flap. No need for anything fancy.

You'll continue making rows until it's even with the two front flaps.

It's looking a lot like a vest now, huh?

Cut it loose now, and ignore the loose ends.

Get out your yarn needle, and yank out a lot of yarn from your ball of yarn. About a foot and a half should be enough, and cut that out.

Now just sew the shoulder parts together. DO NOT USE THREAD FOR THESE PARTS.

Unfortunately, it won't look pretty and consistent with the rest of the pattern on the vest, but if you crisscross it as you sew in the yarn, it should look fine.

Do the same with the other flap.

    And now it's a vest.

But do a test try on with your victim. Remember the arm pits? Check those areas, and sew them up with yarn until they're covered.
If you just wanted a Luffy vest, you have one now. Use some yarn or thread to thread on some buttons. Sew on some clasps or snap-on buttons. Fasten off those loose ends by using the yarn needle to tuck the loose ends INTO the rows.

Yes, that's right. Hide them in the vest, and DO NOT TIE THEM OFF.

    And you're done

Except I'm crazy, so I'm not done.

    Hidden:
This is the vest with the border completed along the longest edge.

And this is the vest with me about to complete the last arm hole's border.

Tell me if you're interested in knowing the pattern to make the border, and I'll post more instructions.

Looking back, this seems less like a cosplay thread, and more like how to crochet a vest tutorial.

But it's to crochet a cosplay item, so who cares. Anyway, as I was hiding one of my loose ends for the "frills," I figured my last explanation of how to hide the loose ends might have not made sense, so here's a picture that may clarify things.

This way works best with solid colored yarns.

Multicolored yarns are a bitch since you don't want the loose ends to be seen. With them, you have to try to hide the yarn in such a way that the colors are hidden amongst similar or the same colors in the yarn. Or cleverly hidden in other ways.

    EDIT:

I'll be starting on the white band across the torso now.

As soon as I figure out which pattern I like best ...

This fits for a cosplay thread. 1) There are tutorials posted pretty much everywhere in this forum. 2) Someone will be wearing it, thus cosplay.

This is the worst tutorial ever, but okay.

Still not sure what kind of pattern I want for that band. I don't want it to just be a plain jane line across.

In any case, for those that are actually following along (and to stall for time while I think of a pattern to use) I'll tell you how I did the border.

And teach you some abbreviations used a shitload in REAL PATTERNS. They'll be in bold.

If you're following along to make the Sexy Frill Vest, and your vest is a lovely teal, switch to a white yarn now. And we're still using the same needle size.

Anyway, this time, you can begin ANYWHERE on the border. But before we get excited about any sort of pattern, it's just so much easier to give yourself a foundation with which to work upon.

Because as you may have noticed, the border does not look like the regular stitches (st) you've been working on. What you want to do, is work along the edge of the border, by doing single crochet (sc) through the SPACES BETWEEN CHAINS. Yup, those little spaces between the single crochets (sc) you did before.

To make sure you're doing it right, check the other side to make sure that it looks something like this:

Once you've done the sc across the entire border, you need to do a slip stitch (sl) with the top of the stitch (st) that you made at the beginning (beg). This is actually how you connect rounds (rnds) in some patterns for hats. That's the only way I do hats, actually.

Anyway, continue on top of the sc you just did.

Make one chain (ch), skip (sk) one ch, and in the next ch make a shell.

    A what?

Actually, while that's the right term for it, you can make a shell in several different ways. The shell that I like to make is made like so:

Work five double crochets (dc) all in one st.

    That's it.

    They'll look like these:

    Now again.

Shell = 5 dc in the indicated st.

Ch 1 (this ch counts as a sc), shell in 2nd ch, sk next ch, 1 sc, sk next ch, shell, sk next ch, 1 sc, sk next ch, shell, etc.

Just make sure you sk a ch each time consistently.

To finish it off, make a sl when you reach the end of the border, and then cut it loose.

Do the same pattern for the arm holes.

So, I just remembered Justice's hat. And you wanted it to not be as floppy. You can actually find some really thick interfacing, and layer that between your crocheted hat layers. You might have to paint the interfacing just in case the holes are too stretched out. But if you make them tight enough, you might not have to deal with that.

I used some pretty thick interfacing for my Akainu coat, and it stood up really well.

    A sexy frill vest?

I do have a shitload of teal yarn left over that I don't know what to do with yet.

Figured out a pattern I might be happy with.

Semi similar to the shell in the border pattern I showed you, but it's a little more complicated in the order everything goes in.

Oyah, and I just remembered. If you know the English crochet terms, I've been using American terms.

    So make the appropriate conversions.

    Half Double is Half Treble

    and Double is Treble

    ...

Now before you start on making the pattern, find the middle point of the vest, and start a slip stitch pattern across it as such.

You'll be threading the pattern through the back stitch (aka, the stitch on the bottom end of the vest).

    So that pattern:

shell = 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in same st

half shell = 3 dc in same st

Make sure you're holding the vest upside down before starting.

ch 3 (counts as first half double crochet hdc and ch 1), skip 2 ch, half shell
ch 1, skip 2 st, hdc in next st
ch 1, skip 2 st, shell
ch 1, skip 2 st, hdc in next st
ch 1, skip 2 st, half shell
ch 1, skip 2 st, hdc in next st
ch 1, skip 2 st, shell
ch 1, skip 2 st, hdc in next st
ch 1, skip 2 st, half shell
ch 1, skip 2 st, hdc in next st
    and so forth

    Looks like this:

    EDIT:

And done with the band. I love how it turned out.

Now comes the harder stuff ...

Me thinks, I'll have to start with the red and purple flowers though.

    From Wikipedia
Interfacing is a textile used on the unseen or "wrong" side of fabrics to make an area of a garment more rigid.
    Interfacings can be used to:
    • stiffen or add body to fabric, such as the interfacing used in shirt collars
    • strengthen a certain area of the fabric, for instance where buttonholes will be sewn
    • keep fabrics from stretching out of shape, particularly knit fabrics
Interfacings come in a variety of weights and stiffnesses to suit different purposes. Generally, the heavier weight a fabric is, the heavier weight an interfacing it will use. Most modern interfacings have heat-activated adhesive on one side. They are affixed to a garment piece using heat and moderate pressure, from a hand iron for example. This type of interfacing is known as "fusible" interfacing. Non-fusible interfacings do not have adhesive and must be sewn by hand or machine.

Ooh, neat. I might look into it since I may need to make her a new hat anyway.

    ...

You may think I'm cranking these out, but really, I'm just used to crocheting, and this damn flower actually took a while due to the outer ring. I had to go through quite a few patterns to get the petal look, and it turned out to be the one I used for the border that looked best.

I really need to get a better camera. These are much prettier in person.

    Anyway.

How to make the red and purple flowers:

    Hidden:
    In red, ch 4.

Insert the hook into the first ch made, and sl to join the chs into a ring.

Ch 3, and then make 13 dc through the hole in the middle. It may take 14 or 15 to fill it in right. Sl with the top ch of those first 3 chs you made in the beg.

You've made your first actual round (rnd). It takes several rounds through the manipulation of increasing (inc) and decreasing (dec) to make a hat, but you're just making a flat circle right now.

You do need to know a little bit about how to increase (inc).

Though, you've been unknowingly doing it for a while.

    It's the shells.

Whenever you make two or more stitches in one stitch or chain, you're making an increase. The only reason this hasn't really done much to the vest so far is because we've been using the increase as a border and not building on top of them.

Okay. If this is your first circle, it probably sucks. Just practice at it before continuing.

Ch 3, and then work 2 st into each st.

If you had just done 1 st in each st, you'd have a very wrinkly circle, and you don't want that. Practice with this too. If you just had inspiration on how hats are done, try making one until you perfect increases.

Do not make a sl at the end of this next rnd. The flower only needs two rndsof red, so now we're switching colors. Insert the hook into where you'll make the sl with the new color. Leave those two loops (lps) on the hook as in the above image.

Cut the red yarn loose, and pull the purple yarn through next.

Ch 3 (this counts as the first dc of the shell), and in the same st add 4 dc.

If you remember how you did the vest border, congrats. If not, here's the rest of the pattern.

Sk next ch, 1 sc, sk next ch, shell, sk next ch, 1 sc, sk next ch, shell, etc.

When you reach the end of the rnd, sl with the top ch of the 3 chs you did in the beg of the rnd.

    Tada.

As you may or may not know how to count, I'll point out that for whatever reason, the first image has six petal shapes while this one has seven.

    I'm not sure why.

The only thing different about the first one is that I goofed a little, and one of the st in the 2nd rnd has only one dc in it. That's all it takes, apparently.

But that's what kind of flower these will be apparently. Six to seven petals.

Really? You want a sexy frills vest?

PM me with some measurements then, I guess.

Measure using one of your more form fitting t-shirts. The waistline, chest line, and from the hips to where the armpit seam is. Also measure from around that seam to the top of your chest.

If you have a wife-beater or tank top of some sort, that'd be even better.

I'd have to say though, my niece's takes top priority.

And uh ... I'll figure out some kind of payment.

I learned the shell pattern from crocheting a baby blanket for my nephew.

That blanket was why I was working on my niece's Unlimited Adventure vest up until the very last moment.

Scarves and hats are the easiest.

Oh, and I'm now sewing the flowers onto the vest.

    EDIT:

This vest only need five flowers to go around the bottom. If you're making a larger vest, you may need to make more flowers.

Also, I have plans to be sneaky concerning my baby niece.

Her mom isn't very thrilled about One Piece, but I've decided to make Luffy's red Drum Island coat for her, and she probably won't notice anyway since it's just a red coat.

    But we'll all know.

And a bunch of ridiculously long hours later after intensive time spent doing the yellow flowers the wrong assfucking way ... I finally finished one:

Luckily, you guys don't have to do it the dumb way I thought would be easiest. Which turned out to be difficult and dumb.

This should take 10-20 minutes tops.

All right, here's how to make one of the yellow flowers:

Ch 4, sl together to make a ring.

Ch 3, 13 dc through the hole, and sl to connect the rnd.

    You only need one rnd.

Now then, it wasn't a shell or any kind of other special ass thing that I did to make the petals. In fact, it was a weird stroke of genius after I pulled out the old way and was just fiddling with the rnd.

I'll just call it the petal pattern.

Petal: This all occurs in the same stitch. Ch 4, in same st 1 tr, ch 4, sl this in same st, sl in next st, repeat.

Continue the petal pattern all across the rnd, and then fasten it off, and you have a yellow flower.

I should be done with this vest very soon, so no more pictures until then.

Oyah, and just a bit of advice I just learned myself.

You know those kiddies arts and crafts sets that give you or your kids some fun thing to crochet?

NEVER EVER get one that has furry looking multi-colored yarn.

If I didn't already know how to crochet, I would have given up on the whole ordeal immediately, and any frustrated eight through ninety-eight-year-old would too.

Get a little booklet on it, or look it up online, and get some hooks and yarn with no frills, and you should be ready to go in no time to make a scarf or blanket or what have you.

The kiddie arts and crafts sets are a fucking joke though.

Besides that, it was marked as $18.99 (we won the thing as a prize this weekend), and for that price, you could get a half dozen hooks, and three or four skeins of yarn which is more than enough for a blanket.

Oh, and learn to do granny squares. They're fun so far. I'm wondering what I could use them as for a cosplay.
