Serious Bounty Hunters probably go where the belli is.
Blackbeard had been searching for a large bounty in the GL for a bit and ended up having to chase Luffy around. It's not Linear and it's not like it's easy to go from point A to B there and major hauls would be too few and far between. But the New World is teeming with high bounties, the WG doesn't have a solid presence there either so there isn't much competition from them there, and people who grew up there must be tough as nails. There was also a high volume of Bounty Hunters on Saboady.. so it might be a sign of what it's like on the other side.

I think that past a certain point bounties aren't so much used for "go get this guy and bring him back" but rather that people who give information leading to the capture of the bounty head get some percentage of the total bounty.

I can't see bounty hunters being very well connected.

Bribery would work for information, or dumb luck.

kuma was not a pirate either but he became a warlord anyone wanted can be given the spot the point in being a warlord is your bounty is removed

    Where are bounty hunters?

They would be where the high bounties are; the New World.
I betcha that there will be an arc involving elite bounty hunters hunting down the Strawhats.

Do you think a Marine can get the bounty on a pirates if they catch him? Or is it just promotions and a pat on the back.

It's possible they get a little bonus in their pay-check.

No wonder drake went to piracy. . he got tired of getting screwed on low marine pay and didn't want to face the Head of HR Akainu the negotiator. XD

They do tend to make a lot of fuss about bounty hunters in One Piece in episode 45, when Luffy first got his bounty. I'm like you, I think they're really underdone. Hahaha all one piece needs are a few Jango Fetts to smooth out the mix!

The duty of the Marines is to maintain a law and order throughout the world and impose the will and might of the World Government. They are therefore considered the key strategic development force in the World Government and are expected to obey its orders at will. Sometimes these orders are questionable, however they are expected to carry them out regardless of opinion. Amongst their duties is awarding bounty hunters the bounties on the heads of a criminal. They tolerate bounty hunters as a method of making their job easier but are known to go out bounty hunting themselves.
