I don't see any coating bubbles coming out of that hand. I think that's just the hand of one of the human pirates getting his ass handed to him by Hodi.

Maybe its just me ^^ Oh well, if we ever find out how coating is done then maybe that will be of use anyway?

Hmm, interesting point. If you want my opinion on it thou, I think the message was Smoker wanting to thank Luffy (albeit begrudgingly) for saving his ass at Alabasta and not really of serious importance. After all, we've seen Smoker quite a few times since then and he hasn't brought up that message. Anyone else wanna chime in on this?

I think it's also a "We're even now, next time we meet, I'll capture you." Since then, he's sworn to capture Luffy in the New World, tried to kill him during the war, and wants to go to the New World (where he'll try to capture Luffy again the next time they meet).
