Thread: Final Fantasy Thread

If you want to make an MMO in the spirit of tactics, don't make the walkthrough last 70 hours.
    - Allow for casual gamers to level up one class that can play while holding their own in a group.
    - Allow for hardcore gamers to mix and match skills in order to create uber classes that excel at PVP and tougher dungeons.
    - Make the menu like old Final Fantasy games, no more intricate menu after menu like FFX and on.

Single player games should start with the story, I can't say I've wanted to play a game since FF1-7, 9.
X and X-2 ... wtf was that? Kingdom Hearts made me curious, but that was more about utilizing gimmicks than storytelling.
    - Let's go back to turn based, with the ability to play in real time, but without significant advantage to doing so.
    - Get rid of the tactics that force side-characters to act on their own, you are given a party, you should control it.
    - Kill off main characters like in earlier games, and again this ties into good storytelling, which at some point in the graphics game, Final Fantasy lost the ball.

Final Fantasy 4 has superior aesthetics than FFXIII in my opinion, the sprites and the battle system work and clearly depict a final fantasy game.

I actually don't think it does at all.

It comes off as a major gimmick especially with the fact that you can revive people from the dead in the game.

Dead characters always get replaced anyways.

I remember a time when an RPG didn't bore you to death by wheeling you around from one location to another to give plot exposition you already knew/didn't care about. Y'know, games that trusted you enough to find the next place you needed to go.

I remember a time when games didn't have a lot of room for actual text, so whenever characters talked, it was somewhat meaningful. Not being dragged from one room to talk, and then another room to talk, etc before being brought to the important parts.

I remember a time when an RPG story didn't have characters that made me want to run them over with my car.

Those times are dead. Wait, when did this turn into another FF thread?

    On-topic:

Final Fantasy has been dead for a long time and Blue Dragon was boring as hell. This entire conversation was like two fans of bad anime arguing in a forum. No matter who wins, they both still suck.

That was one of my main gripes with FFII. You had the three main characters, and then you would get a new fourth character every 2 or 3 hours. Usually, when each character left they would be killed off. Got kinda old.

And speaking of dead characters, I just got to the infamous Aeris death scene in FFVII. Now, I had known all about it ahead of time. I knew how iconic it was and all the fanwank over it. So, knowing what I knew, I tried not to get emotionally invested in her. I barely even used her in my party. But, when the moment came, I still felt sympathetic towards her. I didn't cry or anything, but the music, the atmosphere, and everything we had known about her up to that point made it fairly depressing.

    Now that's good story-writing.

Yeah, and by the time LEON rejoined, he was a weak little pissant whom you had to regrind to get strong enough stats to hold up in Pandemonium.

Although the "Soul of Rebirth" side quest in the remakes does sound pretty interesting.

Such is why I want Maria.

Also, Gordon and Leila didn't die. In fact, Leila was awesome.

Gordon did die. He was crushed by a boulder, remember?

Leila lives though. And yes, she is awesome.

    No, you're thinking of Joseph.

In FFII I always hated trying to head to Town C, only to get slaughtered by the first random encounter in the vicinities of Towns N, O, and P due to the game's vague directions and hatred of cohesive map design.

I remember having so much trouble with the final boss until I realized that I could just spam Berserk on Guy and Leon to rack up insane amounts of damage and win without breaking a sweat. The trick worked like a charm in Soul of Rebirth too.
    ~One Piece anime blog~
    ~Stargazer~, an original story.

This sig is still wittier than yours.

I don't remember a lot about FFII, but I still remember Joseph's death.. poor bastard.

    Good storytelling.

Agreed. I still get a little psyched every time I get to that point in subsequent playthroughs. I love good storytelling moments like that, so every time I get to that part, I get just a little bit jazzed.

Drawing from the past: Not necessarily good.

    Innovation: Not necessarily good

If you think making a good RPG relies solely on one of these factors then you're going to fall down the same path Square did.

And did the guy who made Blue Dragon really just tell Square to be more innovative? Blue Dragon, the game that could easily have been made in 1993 with shoddier graphics and been equally awful then.
    The games will never stop.

Has there ever been a Final Fantasy 3 (the real 3, not 6) release in english/other languages than japanese outside the DS remake? I'm currently playing through I-XII (except for 11) and 3 is the only one left, but I can't stand the DS chibi remakes. Playing the old pixel 2D games is much more fun...

Unfortunately, no. There has not been a legal release of the original 2D style outside Japan.

FFXIV seems to be pretty terrible by all accounts.

Getting a 4.0 on gamespot is quite the black eye.

It's a shitty game for all the reasons I hate MMOs. Let's hope this is a wakeup call for Square Enix.

    Sigh.. who am I kidding?
