I've never seen a title go from vaporware no one's heard of one day, to on the lips of the entire gaming community by the next. That trailer absolutely blew up. Many are riled by it, due to the fact a game is getting so much press from a CG trailer which probably has little to do with the actual game.
But I suspect that this is going to become a standard, or rather other developers are gonna try to follow suite on getting support for titles they're trying to develop. Sad thing is, the only reason this is emotional is cause it's dealing with a death of a child, something that always pulls on the heartstrings and is almost never seen in media, especially video games.
I agree with some of the people who call it shameless, but I'm not holding it against them. If killing a CGI created kid will allow a small developer get on their feet, more power to them.
