There's currently a "Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami" donation, it wasn't up yet when I checked a few hours ago but seems like they're ready to accept donations on it now.

For the people who can't/don't want to donate via phone, the Red Cross has set up the donation pool on their website as well.

Click the little bubble next to the Japan icon at the top, click donate and you're ready to go. It says minimum donation is $10

    For being petty.

And yeah Crossword, I have to agree with you. If there's one overwhelming benefit of the internet and social media sites, it's the ability to remain connected in times of crisis.

Oh god ... i just got home and one of my friends was like so sad, she can't reach some of her jap friends. I don't have that many jap friends but they're all okay.

My whole heart goes out towards the japanese, and i'm really happy that they handled this so well. You can read about restaurants giving food away, and even cell phone batteries so they can call their loved ones.

Also the number of dead keeps rising... its just so sad, 2 trains are missing, 300 dead more than 500 missing and many injured. Japan is "lucky" to have such a history with earthquakes and that their buildings are built to widthstand it, otherwise i can't evne imagine the amount of damages that would have done.

I watched euronews and they showed images of people driving cars being wiped away by the tsunami :/ this is a sad sad day.

I just came home and through a series of mentionings on random newslines and image board posts learned about that catastrophe. Watched the news and what can I say... I'm saddened. Usually I'm not really touched by tragedies, I'm like: "That's sad, sad, but well, I can't help them - I am on the other side of the world." But that time I got touched by their tragedy. I felt that they are humans too, just like me. And they got that challenge for survival...
Long and confused thoughts short - I felt feelings for total strangers. And that is unusual.
And I will not lie - the first person I thought about was Oda. I hope he is okay. That's not because comics and bla-bla. No. For me he is like a close relative.
Perhaps I care about Japan through him, I don't know.
Feel free to flame me for being heartless.

Can we use a word that isn't "jap" please? Sorry, but it bugs me.

    BBC reports:
The situation at the nuclear reactor at Fukushima seems to be worsening. Japanese authorities are now to release radioactive vapour to ease pressure, AP news agency reports. Engineers are trying to fix the cooling system to the main reactor, damaged in the quake.
As it's been said, no-one needs a meltdown added to this right now

Also found out that you can get your company to match your donation so I will get on that after work.

More on the troubled nuclear plant: Japan's trade minister, Banri Kaieda, says authorities are nearing a decision to release radioactive steam from the Fukushima nuclear reactor in a bid to ease a build-up of pressure, AFP reports. Thousands of local residents have been evacuated.
Sounds like things aren't going according to plan.

The Mexican President says the worst of the Tsunami waves seems to have passed the Mexican coast too.

Guys, calm down. There's not going to be a nuclear disaster. Contrary to what alarmists and Hollywood and the Simpsons try to make you believe, nuclear reactors aren't these monstrous uncontrollable things that need to be calmed down at every moment. The reactor's probably (as in 99% likely) been "turned off" (as in filled to the brim with boron and disconnected from the turbines) whilst maintenance and repairs occur. The core hasn't been damaged at all. It is literally impossible for nuclear melt-down to occur at this point.

all we can do is hope that thisīll be over soon

Population of Japan acording to AP:

Eiichiro Oda plus 127 million others.

Stil though I hope he and his family are okay. If anyone has any correct info on what parts of Tokyo were most affected I'd be obliged.
