It is getting stupid-heated, isnt it?

Seriously, though, I do feel a little silly for getting so heated over something so stupid, but my point still stands; this game lifts way too much from one source (Guilty Gear) for comfort. Gross lack of creativity like that just bugs me is all, and this game already has so much going against it for me. An all-female (or all-anything, really) cast is boring. I like my Vanessas, Leonas, and Bonne Jenets just fine. Hell, Jenny was one of my main 3 in KOFXI. But I also like my Heiderns, my Oswalds, and my Geeses... Geese... Ah, fuck it. Anyway, basing a roster on how horny you are hurts things further through lack of variety.

And a friend of mine who's been following this game brings up a point; what's the point of infinite prevention if you have legit 90+ hit combos that do 100% damage anyway? And why have 3-on-3 battles with a roster of only 8 characters?

Either way, it's a big-time no-buy for me, and that's all I have to say on the matter.

Parasoul is the Elder Princess of the Canopy Kingdom and the commander of a small, elite group of soldiers called the Black Egrets. She enters the fray to chase down her sister, who is searching for the Skullgirl - someone possessed by a powerful artifact called the "Skull Heart" that has the ability to grant a single wish. But she knows that if worse comes to worst, the duty to her kingdom comes first.

Her little sister is the Younger Princess of the Canopy Kingdom - Umbrella. Born while the last queen carried the Skull Heart, she senses traces of her mother in the newly awoken Skull Girl, and seeks her out.

Also, the cross chick archetype is in japanese fighters everywhere - you're smoking. Melty Blood, Arcana Heart, Rage of the Dragons, Soul Calibur, practically every doujin fighter in creation. Guilty Gear did NOT pioneer the holy warrior, and you know it.

Baldhead was a killer doctor with a giant scalpel. That chick's a killer doctor who a giant bonesaw. You're right, they're nothing alike. Except that they're both killer doctors wielding giant surgical impliments, but whatever.
Valentine is a mid-boss. You may notice the katana handle on her bonesaw. She'll play like a doctor-ninja. She used to be a part of the Anti-Skullgirl lab that made Peacock - but betrayed their group when she witnessed the Skullgirl's power first hand.
And silly me, A.B.A has a giant key strapped to her back she uses to fight, not a pinwheel. I mean, sure, she's also beat up and fucked up looking and they both utilize their respective aetsthetical injuries in their fighting styles, and sure, she's lifting Zappa's hunched-psycho-in-pain "Schrodinger Fu" aesthetic down to the eyes, but pffft.
No calling her out for ripping Mukuro from the Last Blade? Or Gen-An and Basara from Samurai Showdown? Or Voldo from Soul Calibur? I mean, they were hunched over and crazy and had big weapons too.

But Painwheel, like Peacock, was one of Valentine's experiments as part of the Anti-Skullgirls project. No longer fettered by authority, she wants to validate her existence by killing the Skullgirl.
I'll admit that the entire cast isn't lifted from Guilty gear, but waaaay too much of this shit is, and it's main character goes well beyond "homage" and straight into xerox territory (her name is Fillia, for criminy's sake). Hazama and Makoto were homages. That shit's highway robbery. Worse than what SNK pulled with Ryo in Art of Fighting. One or two homages is one thing, but character after character is taking something from Guilty Gear, sometimes their entire character.

The first two characters they showed were way too god damn Guilty Gear, one would be another ripoff if it weren't for the dates (and I'm still betting she's gonna take something from Carl, but we'll see), one's pulled their entire aesthetical schtick from a Guilty Gear character, and I wanna know cross chick's backstory, because I smell the stank of Ky.
Main character is a schoolgirl who has had her memories devoured by the parasite on her head and forms a deal with it to take down the Skullgirl so she can wish her memories back.
The others are dead people revived by the mafia by parasites,
Slaves broken and made into living weapons that kill people like Wile E. Coyote might,
Circus performers made into mafia hitmen,
And one of a group of thieves who survived being caught and decapitated and wants to wish her friends back to life.

Something I think you just don't understand... or at least are underestimating, is the amount of time and effort that goes into designing and animating and doing all the spritework for an HD handdrawn game... from scratch. I gave that shit a crack through Mugen. That shit is HARD. And on the scale they're doing it? Difficult to imagine. The Skullgirls project was started back in 2001 by Alex Ahad. ...That's it! No Capcom, no SNK, just a bunch of fighting game enthusiasts. Have you ever heard of Autumn Games or Reverge Labs before? But their spritework and animation is better than SFII HD Remix, with all of UDON behind it.

You're soooo convinced that everything was ripped from Guilty Gear, when really, these tropes have been appearing in fighting games for decades. And all that work that was going into making these characters and giving them interesting fighting styles (which, as I mentioned in my first post, will have CvS style ratios as well as an -ism system) has taken years of labor. It started a DECADE ago. You think they're still drawing up sprites just so they can rip off Carl Clover? Don't be daft. I know you're not an idiot.

I suppose at the core of it, it's frustrating to me to have seen artwork from this game back in late 2003, back when it was barely getting its legs. To have followed it off and on, and realized that they'd have to go back to the drawing board to make it work for HD systems. And then hear all of that (to my eye) extremely cool style and hard work get shart all over by someone making baseless and on the face of it wrong assumptions about the game.

Sorry for losing my cool, but this is the sort of project I wanna see succeed. I can't stay Silent about that.

I know what your thinking? "Skullgirls? That sounds like their ripping off Khorne's skull throne!"

But as it turns out, Khârn the Betrayer himself (Khorne's #1 go-to man) his helping with this game. Not only did he help with the funding, he's the one who talked Mike Z into helping! Talked and beat him nearly to death with a Tekken Tag Arcade Cabinet.

Man, that Khârn, what a guy!

Seriously, to it's credit, I think everything i've seen so far has it's own personality and a pretty unique style. Sure it's anime inspired in many degrees so OF COURSE you can draw parallels between characters.

But this comparing to GG talk is silly. You look hard enough, play enough mental gymnastics, you'll see some comparisons. But most of those are small and arbitrary. As Silence said, tropes like these have been around for a while.

Hope this is the start of many XBLA/PSN games for the summer.

Last year, the summer was great in terms of XBLA/PSN games. I'd love a repeat of that.

You'd have to break my arms to STOP me from maining Parasoul.

Though I really want to see what they fight like before I make any commitments.
