Animator: So yeah, when we got to 167, some intern who went to one of those pretentious-ass "high art" things suggested we put as little effort as possible and smoke a lot of pot while making the episode. I personally believe it to be our finest achievement.

Apparently the key animator for those infamous scenes is often complained about by other guys in the industry because they have to constantly alter it to make it look less grotesque.

Now, that style of animation can work in very select cases, like for a hallucination or something, but for a serious, climatic fight scene? No way.

But the scenes right after that were pretty decent though.

Yea...there isn't much you can say other than "We're sorry, please forget about this and move on". I mean, in and of itself, pain wasn't the best character (drawn or developed), but I honestly can't find any excuse why this animation would be so awful. I mean, someone saw a few second clip before they continued on with the company right? Someone had to see what they could do and go "eh...maybe some other time...". It scares me to believe that this can pass with how high up Naruto is in popularity.

True, but then it is overlooked by the awful hitting animations, or the running, or the perfectly isoperimetrical rubble.
