I'm fairly certain Greek is pronounced pretty much how it's spelled.

Not really. 0.o It's an alphabetic language (like English or Russian) which means that every letter of the alphabet, equals to a phoneme of the speaking language. For grammar reasons there are some diphthongs that are read differently but yeah. In general lines, it sounds like it's spelled.
PS: The names of the letters, mean nothing. They are just their names. What they symbolize is phonemes. Just to clear what might be causing the confusion.
