Thread: Ultimate Spider-Man (2012 cartoon)

They should've let Chris Yost oversee this project too. His work on Wolverine and the X-Men is, Avengers EMH is great AND his Spidey comics are great.

And they should've at least linked this cartoon to EMH, but they didn't even do that. Everything about this cartoon is the definition of wasted potential.

Another thing I didn't like was replacing Ultimate Spidey's amazing friends (Kitty, Iceman, Torch) with MORE Avengers. This was the perfect oppportunity to use X-Men and FF characters, because those characters don't have a cartoon, but instead Marvel forces us to endure even more Avengers. As if they aren't everywhere already.

    T-E-E-N! S-P-I-D-E-R! Teen Spider, let's go!

Though a blatant Teen Titans ripoff (Nova is a pretty poor substitute for Starfire), it's somewhat okayish if only by comparison to the Marvel Mashups that also air during the block, which are horrendously awful. It's not worth losing Spectacular Spider-Man for, but I think everybody feels that way.

To be fair, the Avengers they're using in USM aren't really well-known and used that much anyway. They're not in the movies or EMH, and while the X-Men would be nice to make it fit Ultimate comics better they might have some problems with X-Men rights. Don't quote me on that last one though.

There's pictures floating around of Luke Cage and Iron Fist in EMH.

Marvel has all cartoon rights for X-Men.

Yeah, but it doesn't seem they'll be the main cast anyway...in any case, those four are the least of my problem with this show. In fact, despite (or rather, thanks to) the shorter screentime they have I like them better than Peter Parker.

So Marvel has X-Men rights? I wonder why they don't make a X-Men cartoon then, or why they cancelled Wolverine and the X-Men...is it because of ratings? Because I think it was picking up as it goes on, shame to see it cancelled.

It had Nicktoons' best ratings ever (DBZK aside) during its run, but was cancelled because of budgetary reasons. WHATEVER, Marvel. I bet you cancelled it to finance this ADD drivel.

Except The Batman wasn't complete and utter crap. The fan backlash was just retarded because the villains were different renditions.

This show though? This show? Oh my god.

I'm scared of whoever thought those "quips" were even quips. The cutaway gags are awkward too and need to stop. This show already needs a new writer and we're only 2 episodes in.

And Nick Fury... said Peter Parker's identity IN THE OPEN.

Funny enough, Aunt May is strangely sexualized in this and MJ isn't. That's creepy. Very creepy.

Aunt May isn't sexualized. She's just more like the cool aunt from the Ultimate comic than the old bat she usually is.

I was kinda joking about the Yoga scene.

Edit: well not "kinda", I was referring to the Yoga scene.

Right, I forgot about the yoga scene, much like all of the other cut-away gags. The only good one was the Spanish Spidey scene and that was because it contained a Community reference.

I watched the first two episodes and well...I don't think it's all that great.

It's not awfull, but as you've all stated, it's the series that came right after the perfect Spectacular Spider-man. This show though, feels like they took a bunch of ideas from other shows and put them onto Spider-Man's back expecting his fame to carry these elements flawlessly. They have the quirky-non seriousness of Teen Titans, more cutaway gags than Family Guy, and to top it off it's just plain gimicky. I want to see Spider-Man fighting bad guys and making jokes, not Spider-man being a junior agent of SHIELD. Not Spider-Man and his amazing Aveneger friends. I want to see Spider-Man fighting enemy's with his own friends present, doing it classy Spidey style.

But then again, like I said, this is right after Spectacular Spider-Man, THE animated form of this character.

Some positives though, I like Drake Bell as Spider-Man...well kind of. He's not bad, but it's going to be hard to not picture Drake Bell when I hear that voice, and just hear Spider-Man. I do like that they went with the younger Aunt May from Ultimate Spider-Man. It's a nice way to show the character. I don't like that they pulled the "SHIELD discovered Spider-Man's identity thing, though if it doesn't get to the level it is in the Ultimate comics(in which EVERYONE knew his identity), it's not that big of a deal.

If this tanks what are the odds of spectacular getting picked up again?

Zero, because Spectacular was produced by Sony. Wolverine and the X-Men has a better chance of being picked up again, because the show takes place in the same universe as EMH, is in continuous reruns on Disney XD and there's a similarly titled comic around now (though completely different premise) that is both critically acclaimed and is one of Marvel's best selling titles.

oh i forgot all about this. I'll go check it out later to say i've seen it, but I'm with wolfy here.

edit: it's so. so. "cartoony" doesn't feel like spiderman at all. and what's all with this team stuff. this is a new stupid trend. I did like the comic element it gave, but man this sucks.

The only good thing about this show is the animation.

Even JK Simmons is wasted on this show, as he's just an image on a monitor.

Why does spiderman need a motorcycle other then to sell toys

And I guess it's kinda cool he's gonna use that robo-suit from the civil war series from a few years ago.But I thought that got a lot of fan backlash, though.

I get what you're saying Saturn and I kindof agree... I mean, Avengers Earth's Mightiest is in the same programming block and it's nowhere near as juvenile feeling...
But the one joke about him "sitting next to Spider-man in Spanish class" got a laugh out of me I have to admit...
    Nothing here for now.

I had no idea Spectacular was so beloved. I certainly never heard it being raved about, and from what I saw of it didn't seem that special either. Guess I'll have to give it a watch.

To sum it up, it's the most accurate depiction of Spidey. It gets the overall mood of the comic down perfectly. Every episode has got to have at least two-dozen Spidey-quips. It doesn't feel cheesy or forced, this IS an animated Peter Parker. You love the characters, and they do a very good job at blending aspects from different continuity's together. The animation is a bit strange, though you get used to it. The only reason I can give you to not watch it is because you'll cry because you'll want more!
