I had assumed that it was before the timeskip and that it was Mihawk...But if it's after then I have no clue.

Zeypher had a dream of becoming a hero of justice, but through the hurt of pirates on his family and the betrayal from the WG, his goals became more vicious as he reverted to his child-like state of what he believed was true justice. His new intentions become more vigorous as he attempts to destroy every pirate that hurt him for his perceived justice.

It wasn't until he fought Luffy that he realized that by destroying everyone, he would be destroying the dreams of everyone around him, just like he had as a child. It was Luffy's determination and his good nature that makes Z realize that they have dreams too just as he had his own, thus his perception of pirates change and ultimately his desire to kill everyone vanishes.

He then proceeds to fight against his old comrades in the Marines knowing that there is no going back, he is happy knowing he was such a role-model to them. He fights against them for their 'last training', but remains an idol (with Borsalino calling him 'Master') to those reminiscing. Z dies as the strong 'Hero of justice' he always wanted to be.

Zeypher wouldn't be the 'Hero' Z he imagined as a child if he killed everyone from setting off the last point. If he did then everyone who idolized him would also die, ultimately this is why is stopped, because he cherished his childhood aspirations so much that he didn't want to destroy anyone elses. Kuzan treats him like a true idol, and makes sure that Z's two closest comrades respect him for who he was.

Z is by far the best villain so far in One Piece. It's hinted at throughout, but it's not until the final scene until we see Zeypher as the Hero 'Z' who idolized the justice of the Marines, it is reflected in the credits when we see the child (big mouth) idolizing pirates with his own costume similarly crafted like Z's.

Dreams continue to live on as long as there are aspirations!

I'm still finding it really hard to pin-point the main message that was being conveyed, because there are so many. I think the main thing Oda tried to convey were the aspirations of a Marine, rather than a Pirate which is already heavily highlighted in One Piece. Ultimately this is a story about Z's aspirations more than anyone elses, hence the title shown again at the credits.

Anyone else want to give a shot at tackling it?
    Spoiler:
You know, this movie almost struck me as a warning about the dangers of idealizing institutions/people. Z's driven to the point that he is because he has these ideals of justice and heroism and believes that the best way to put his ideals in to practice is to join the Navy. He does that, becomes an admiral, loses his family, stays on with the navy, lose his arm and a training class, and stays on until he finds out that the pirate who killed his trainees is now a Shichibukai. The extent of how much he idealizes the Navy and their ideas of justice is insane and it strikes me that despite all of the darkness that exists in the One Piece world, it's the failure of the Government to live up to his standards that pushes Z over the edge.

And in all honesty, this really resonates with Smoker's statement in the manga and anime about how organizations aren't infallible, no matter how good they are, because they're made up of people. And then in the manga...

    Spoiler:
Kuzan echoes the sentiment with his line about he didn't think the Navy was all that from the beginning!

And so there really seems, at least to me, to be this underlying message about how dangerous idealism actually can be because the strength of Z's ideals - justice and heroism - were so great that when the Government betrayed them, Z took a more extreme route to uphold them. Obviously, his methods were wrong and completely contradictory, but that was how strongly he believed in what he was doing.

You're right, that has to be it! There's just so much to dissect in this film compared to the others, I think it's because it brings forward a lot of questions about the underlying themes/ ideals within the OP world, such as the WG and Kuzan as mentioned. It raises more questions which we don't see often in the manga. I hope Oda delves deeper for future chapters.

    Spoiler:
I love that bit from Smoker but I can't find the chapter/episode.

Can you help me jog my memory?

Zephyr's path to redemption was very well done.

Overall, it doesn't look too forced yet still delivers the emotion across.

    A fitting end for Zephyr.

It's in Chapter 664 - Master Caesar Clown. The episode it's in should have a similar title.

So how come akainu still boast about justice and stuffs. He's the same corrupt level as WG themselves.

Just saw this a day ago. This was one of the best anime movies I've seen, certainly better than the few OP movies I have seen. The illustration and its style was beautiful, I don't just mean more detail than the half assed attempts of the way the anime is now, I just mean in general, the colors, feel, really engaging. I know it's not possible, but having high detailed illustrations like this would be amazing in the anime, makes me wish the anime itself would only air for half a year and we would get a great anime.

I loved the story, everything flowed well and the antagonist was really an awesome villain. I have to say though, is it me or does Garp and Sengoku look a lot older? :S Luffy in this also doesn't look 12 anymore, which was nice to see. Animation, illustration, music (loved that song that Aokiji(?) was singing), story, pace, everything went well together like a well oiled machine. Is this canon?

    10/10

Kizaru, man. The way his fight scenes were done, it's almost as if he was god-like.

Incredible movie! Loved every second of it!
You guys have no idea how excited I get to meet One Piece enthusiasts in real life! One Piece fans know how to live and love life!

My dream is that we can all enjoy Oda's message ofcamaraderie

    together!

Wow the subbed movie came out way earlier than I expected. I really love the camera/angle works in the fight scenes of the movie, they are one of the best parts. The only problem is the quality of the video but I'll watch the movie again when they upload a better quality and better translation of it.
Z was definitely a way better villain than Shiki

One Piece Film Z will be on sale 28th June. We will have 2 differents editions both in DVD/Blu-ray: normal and Greatest Armored Edition and I think will include Glorious Island.

You just know that the limited one will sell like cupcakes due to a certain orange-haired lady displaying her refined body.

First time I would actually order a Blue Ray overseas, its worth it, I want it. I also want it to sell out and for the producers to aim for this kind of quality in the future

I'm very tempted to import the Greatest Armored Edition, even though I've never imported anything. I really enjoyed the movie that much.

Looks that way. Honesty, I'm more curious in how the deuce this connects to Z in any way. As far as I can tell, the 2nd part of this special never got leaked and the 1st part presumably consisted of little more of a series of close-ups of Nami swimming, most of the guys eyeballing her, and some Nami x Brook fanservice. Oh, and a sea creature of some sort. Does the 2nd part tease a bombshell revelation about Z, the WG, or the New Navy? A series of close-ups of Zoro's pecs as he's working out juxtaposed with show-mo footage of Chopper rubbing suntan oil on Robin, with a brief glimpse of volcanoes erupting at the end? Hopefully we find out sooner rather than later.

I think all this thing is, is just showing the strawhats screwing around on the ship 5 minutes before we see them in the movie

    Its basically a "deleted scene"

So finally got to watch it.

Seemed to be basically Oda having another bash at the themes from Strong World but from the marine side. Much more successfully this time too. 4/6 are still my favourites, but I'd quite happily sit down and watch this again.
