Just pre-ordered Black 2 and getting White tomorrow.
Any recommendations for the starter? I can't decide between the water and the fire one and I don't know if I can get good fire or water pokes in the game which are equal/better than the starters.

i personally choose the grass one but in black 2 i'm having the water one. His last form is brilliant. I don't like the fire one at all. So Oshawatt

Just go with what you like better. The game is balanced out after all. Any team you have is at maximum only going to have 12 types on it at a time after all, out of 17.

Fire types are, in general, rarer than the other starter types. But they've introduced the monkey trio which balance out any deficit you want, and the new game is going to have at the very least, Growlithes early on, so there will be some fire to pick from.

Also, while fire is able to do great damage to bug, grass, ice, steel.... Fighting type hits ice and steel (and normal, rock and dark) while bug isn't a threat to anything, and grass can be hit by a lot of things and is resisted by 7 types. Basically, you can get by without a fire type at all. But the starter adds fighting type in its later forms, so...

Water is the most common type in the franchise with 110 different water monsters (making up nearly 1/6 of the entire 600 critter roster) and hits almost all the same things grass does, but has a a lot less personal weaknesses.

They all have thier strengths and weaknesses, and all can be easily replaced. Just go with whatever you like.

Personally, I always *intend* to use a starter all game, but almost never actually do.

I don't think I've ever chosen the Grass starter, always either Fire or Water.

Last time I picked Tepig, so this time I'm going to try out Oshawott. Its evolutions should've gained either a Fighting or Ice dual-typing if you ask me.

Same, except I know for sure.
In fact, I've always chosen the fire starter in my 11-12 years of Pokémon gaming until Black/White came along. I really, really don't like that pig.

Bulbasaur was great in gen 1 when its poison subtype helped fight off other posion types... back when poison could still hurt more than just grass, and there were less types overall. {Poor poison types... can only hurt grass now... and many grass has a posion subtype...) But was hard pressed to compare with Charizard, who could well... fly. And be your token flying monster.

Then Cydaquil, Treeko, Turtwig, then Wotter.

Overall I've used the grass starter most, but... I just go with what I like best. Especially since the starter usually doesn't make it past the third or fourth gym with me. (Soooo many water types to choose from, and I'm a sucker for a lot of the stupid grass monsters. Like Bellsprout.)

There has yet to be a Generation in which my first playthrough starter wasn't water. 2nd playthrough I just pick whichever of the 2 starters appeals to me more.

I've never chosen a fire starter not because I didn't like them but because I liked the water or grass starter more.

The best one offensively is the Fire pig. Though you do get access to Darumaka early on if you want that thing which really hits like a fking tank.

Yeah but the downside is that both have absolutely pitiful defense and one good hit could defeat them

Oshawott gets alot of moveset coverage throughout the game, so he's best for me. Especially if you treach it X-Scissor or Megahorn. A Bug move is awesome to have as it destroys Dark, Psychic, Grass. He also has some offensive water and fighting moves. But to tell the truth, he became so good that I barely used him for anything other than emergency. The game is filled with awesome pokemon to catch, and since there's almost no concept of HM slaves, you might find yourself wanting to use anything other than a starter for a balanced battling team.

And.. that thing of Fire types being rare... Don't pick Tepig if you think that's an issue. He evolves and becomes paired with the Fighting type. That and having a fire type isn't as beneficial in the game.

Snivy is okay. It's fast and it learns some really powerful grass moves, but I'm not sure if it has a decent moveset coverage to learn stuff that's beyond just grass moves. It's kind of the whole reason why I don't use Psychic types. The usually have high special attack, but barely learn any special attack moves outside their typing to cover weaknesses.(sort of why Fighting types are usually better than them)

Snivy is going to be so damn amazing and broken once they get around to releasing its Dream World ability.

Contrary... AND Leaf Storm? That's just... so utterly broken.

Also. Shuckle has Contrary too. And now it has Shell Smash. That's just sick.

Any Pokemon with that ability and moves such as Overheat, Super Power, and/or Leaf Storm would be utterly broken

Special attack going up by 2 stages after one 140 base power Leaf Storm?
Yeah, that's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard.

Too bad aside from boosting its speed, it can't really survie hits from other things that threaten grass. If it was as bulky as Venasuar, then there would be problems.

The only fire starters I picked were Cindaquil and Chimchar.
The Pokemon in their gens helped you building a team around those 2.

Anyway.Just got Black Kyurem today. It sure is OP as hell.
I still have many things to do though.
