Sounds pretty interesting. I wonder if any scene will be reanimated a la Dragon Ball Kai.

Probably just an upscale.
I suspect it'll be a lot better then my dvd player upscales my funi dvds though, so looking forward to it.
I guess they're going to re-air episodes 1-206 since those are the only ones that are in SD.
This could be very good.
I just hope that someone will upload the HD episodes so I can download them^^
You think there will be new openings? The reruns of Naruto and Gintama had new animated real HD openings!
They'll use this opening:

Awesome, would love to see the episodes in widescreen, but obviously that would be too hopeful!
So what, will there be any noticeable difference from what is currently available on DVD?
I would have preferred a remake in shortest version (Buggy Arc in one episode instead of 5-6, Kuro in two, ecc ecc) and new draw&color quality -.-''
hahaha yeah a remake would have been great but knowing Toei, they will do a half-assed job
because there's the serious risk that the TOEI make another too slow anime with 1 ch = 1 ep. i know that so they must cut something, but it must be only a revival for the new world. who don't know the previous story can see 50 30minutes oav and know all the main point of it. for example, in kuro arc I would abbreviate the zoro vs. nyaban bros fight. A more complete example:
OAV 0: Luffy's story, Zoro's story
OAV 1: Luffy arrive to Toroa Island in the barrel, meet koby, talk with him and Aluvida and defeats her. Next they go for Sheltz Town. Arrived in that, they visit the Marine Base and see Zoro. Appeares Rika thato want to give him the onigiri and Helmeppo that destroy them. Luffy owns him, talk with zoro and go for the swords. Morgan appeares and notices that Koby's trying to free Zoro. Luffy found the swords and give that to Zoro that stops the marines. Zoro and Luffy vs. Morgan and Helmeppo. Morgan defeated. Luffy and Zoro go to the bar of rika's mom. There there's the question of Luffy and Koby. Koby want to be a marine and go with the seargent (or what is him), while Zoro and Luffy sail.
OAV 2: Kobymeppo's miniserie
OAV 3: Buggy arc
OAV 4: Gaimon Arc, a half od Kuro's arc
OAV 5: end of Kuro's arc, Johnny & Yosaku, Baratie Arc begin: it end with Don Krieg appeares
OAV 6: Mihawk, Sanji's story
OAV 7: Jango's miniserie
OAV 8: Buggy's miniserie
OAV 9: Arlong Park Arc begin
OAV 10: Story of Nami
OAV 11: Fight to Arlong Park
OAV 12: Arlong's defeat
OAV 13: Logue Town case - Part 1
OAV 14: LOgue Town case - Part 2, sail for grand line
Decent pacing: it's impossible, don't even try.
OR: Hey, they could stretch this out way too much! So let's edit the shit out of it instead!
OR: Character development? What's that? We don't really need it, do we?
OR: Bah! Why should I care about the East Blue saga? Let's just get to the big fights and be done with it.
Guys, it's not a revival for the New World! It's just a regular rerun, like Naruto Shonen Hen and the Bleach rerun.
OP was pretty much filler free for the first 70 or 80 episodes (dragon girl filler arc aside.) and was getting 2 eps per episode, which is a fine pace, and pretty much the ideal pacing for an ongoing anime adaptation.
Dragonball Kai, which should have been getting 3 chapters per episode and done the whole series in 98 episodes, was really popular when it started, (and they did 3 chapters per episode up through the Saiyans) and so they slowed it the hell down mid-Frieza to try and milk it, and thus ruined the entire point of it, only barely getting through Cell by episode 96.
There'd be almost nothing *to* cut from the OP anime for the early episodes that wasn't, you know, actually in the manga. Certainly not enough to warrant a re-edit. they'd only be able to trim it down by 3 or 4 episodes over the course of 50.
Now, re-edited Skypiea, Water 7 and Thriller Bark, where they had gotten to 1 chapter=1 episode, HELL YES.
they could either remove all the filler like with kai and do it from water 7 onwards or just do the first 3 arcs in widescreen like with gintama. They could also do both but like what's been said the pacing was fine until skypeia. All they would have to do is fix the calm belt part to remove the little girl and it's filler free.
This could also be a good opportunity to do the missing cover arcs not that i'm getting my hopes up
Anyone hoping for/expecting any alterations to the actual story as a part of this, drop that idea right now. This is literally a re-run.
Now, I checked the Japanese press release on Toei's site, and it says the image will be "High-quality"/"High-resolution" but nowhere does it use any terminology that can be translated as "High Definition" or "HD". If that were the case, you'd either just see "HD" or you'd see "高精細度". Neither is there. So, I doubt these episodes are going to be true "HD" at all, otherwise they totally would have said that.
It's probably going to be somewhat of an upscale, but I doubt it's even going to be 720p.
Nothing here for now.
Cool! That sounds awesome! Will Funimation be releasing this instead of the originals?
I didn't mean a repackaging, I just meant more of a replacement. Like, the rest of Skypeia could be released as the new edition. Or does Funi already release it upscaled? I just watch it on their site, so I wouldn't know. I do plan to start buying the DVDs at some point though. Probably when they get into Water Seven, from which I may work backwards.
Also, are they really selling that badly? Dang. I figured that it would sell better than most of Funi's catalog. I mean, a lot of people saw One Piece on 4kids and Cartoon Network. It was never as popular as DB, Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh! but it didn't seem like a total flop. It was on 4kids for much longer than many programs.
Watch it be a 16:9 crop in 480p.
Many One Piece fans would rather download fansubs than buy the sets, which is a problem many anime suffer from in the States. If you want to get it, I'd say now's the best time since they're releasing 26 episode Collection sets that you can buy online for as low as 20.99. No need to wait. And Robby's exaggerating to an extent. OP isn't one of FUNi's biggest titles but it seems to be selling well enough for FUNi to at least want to continue.
But yeah, I doubt they'd release it here. I wouldn't really expect any significant changes from the original broadcast. Plus all of the SD episodes have already been released in America (except for the last SD episode, 206).
