I think the people who are saying Sanji doesn't care about Luffy are WAY off.
If he didn't care about Luffy, why did he stand up and try to offer himself to Kuma at Thriller Bark?

In the current Manga arc I don't see too much wrong with Sanji's character.

True, but this is sort of explained in-story. Sanji's 2-year stay with the Okama's understandably made him a lot more irritable and woman-crazy than he was before. I do admit I don't like the new Sanji as much as the old, Chivalrous and Woman-crazy one though.

However, in keeping with his nose-bleed thing from the start of the post-time-skip arc, it could be temporary.

I may be alone with this, but overall, this flashback won a nice place in my heart. One of the best.

No I have to admit and agree with a previous comment that characters are becoming 2-dimensional in the anime. Sanji has his moments, but when he's given the spotlight he usually blows it with mellorine moments.

This episode he seemed fine though, I don't get what everyone is upset about.

Also the 'fanservice" everyone is talking about is probably more about Shirahoshi's ever-changing bra size than anything, but imo it was the lower angle that made them look the size of Marineford (though they probably aren't far from it...)

Actually, the one goofy moment he had in the chapter, where he assumes Nami's talking about him, was cut out of the episode:

I find this argument to be very weak. I read the manga and watch the anime, and while I would agree the manga as a whole is better (which is usually the case outside of Bleach), to say the characters' personalities are being butchered in the anime just doesn't make any sense. The characters are just the same in both versions.

Maybe it's all the Anime-related promotions, movies, and fillers that make me feel this way, but the characters aren't the same anymore. I think ever since the time skip started it's all felt a little different...I don't feel this way about the anime up until recently though.

You also need to look at this from a realistic plot and character advancement point. Though it may seem like a lifetime (10 years for us), the Strawhats only spent at most a few months together pre-timeskip. That was the total length of their grand journey. People change; especially within a gap of them being separated for longer than they've known each other. Every Strawhat had their own self-reflective little adventure and matured from it -- in a way, they are different people.

Physically, my issue is only with the women of the group, who Oda is drawing more generic than ever - especially Nami. Also Chopper.. but I bitched about that already.

Point is, you're not crazy in noticing change. It is there in every aspect from the way they look to the way they act. This isn't bad; change is what keeps things alive.

If you want to argue the characters have changed in both the manga AND anime, that's a different story. Clearly there are differences after the time skip, but I've already gotten used to them. A few things that bugged me at first were Nami, Franky, and Chopper's new designs, but they work well once you get past the shock factor.

But to say they are completely different in the anime versus the manga is a completely different argument that does not work at all. Even with the fillers, which some are hit and miss as far as plot goes, I've never seen One Piece fillers do anything to make a character act out of character. Yes, they screwed up with a few PLOT points, which created plot holes for the anime canon, but that's also a different story. All in all, the characters are the same in the anime as in the manga. For argument's sake, the only characters I would be willing to discuss on this matter are characters like Hancock and Buggy that were used as filler generators during the war, which may give viewers a different interpretation, but even then I don't think they acted OUT of character, just hammed up their character traits far too much.

That's what I was looking for as a way to describe what I'm seeing. With such a large main cast (9 crew members, and supporting characters in each arc like Caimie, Shirahoshi, etc) I feel that the little time each actual Straw Hat gets on screen is them reinstating their character by doing something typical of them...

It's just a bit of a broken record sometimes. Don't get me wrong, there are key plot moments where this doesn't happen, but generally each Straw Hat is fighting for screen time and all they can do when they get it is something expected of them.

*I have to admit this has been completely different in the newest arc, and I'd like to see how it plays out animated.*
