Thread: Music in 2012

    Default Music in 2012

okay this thread is going to be our Talk New Music thread. Basically, if it released in 2012? It's relevant.

Not to talk of my own taste at all in this opening post and not to paint HIP WHITE COLLEGE ROCK vibes so don't adhere to just that plz, I just want to be broad here and cover all those really popular examples to be a reaching weenie since these tend to garner more discussion

There'll be some popular new releases later this year like Animal Collective, a new DAN DEACON (okay this is one is relevant to my taste by far), a hilarious sounding probably bad collab between St. Vincent and David Byrne, and Grizzly Bear recently dropped a new track that I hope won't be the only possibly exciting song on the record

There've been some other big ones that just came out the past couple of weeks like the Ty Segall jam and that Fiona Apple album everybody is divided on between being BEST OF THE YEAR and being garbage (I'm never listening to it probably)

And then earlier in this year we had andre 3000 and james murphy collabing with Gorillaz, Death Grips go mondo big with The Money Game, their sophomore album if you count their awesome mixtape as their debut. College kids liked Japandroids and Beach House. I was all over the new Swans album because they are never bad. The new Spiritualized was actually really good! There was also Chromatics, Julia Holter, The Men (another I dug a lot), Grimes, Perfume Genius, Sleighbells, Cloud Nothings, Talabot's debut, new Burial, Thee Oh Sees, the... ugh Shins

    ---

But fuck all that let's talk about me because High on Fire is still awesome and Keiji Haino's new collab with O'Rourke and Ambarchi (not like it matters Haino turns everything he touches into Haino) with it are my two most listened to albums of this year. But that Spiritualized is getting a lot more plays than I realized. I also actually like Voices in the Lake, but if I get around to listening to better ambient and drone work it'll probably fall off of my Sleeping Music schedule pretty fast

barn owl, the evan caminiti band, is probably my favorite new outfit (Lost in the Glare is so god) and I hope they drop new shit forever. they are super tight

I bought three albums from this year so I'll post them.

River City Extension - Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Anger
The third album by them and the second full length album. They're an indie folk rock band and one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite. The theme of this album is I think the various relationships that the lead singer went through early on in his life and the album has a sort of coherency to it. I don't really like the final song though and feel that it could have ended on the song before it. All in all though it's an amazing album. I highly suggest it if you're into indie rock.

Of Monsters and Men - My Head is an Animal
Another indie rock band. I heard one of their songs on the radio and went and listened to other songs and love them. I have a thing for male-female duets and that's pretty much their style.

    Gojira - L'enfant Sauvage
Latest album by death metal band Gojira. I listened to the title track a few times which convinced me to buy it, and I liked their previous albums. Their lyrics typically deal with environmental themes like global warming and such which is kind of odd for a death metal band but it's not bad. I can't want to listen to the full album.

Listened to Metric's Synthetica yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised. They aren't normally my kind of band, but I liked this album for some reason. Not really sure why.

And I just started listening to Japandroids last week, and I must say it was awesome.

Disappointed by The Shins new album, but it's honestly not The Shins anymore. When only one guy remains, and he was responsible for about half of the creative content, you're still missing more than half the actual band.

The album Bloom by Beach House was hugesly satisfying for me. All of my expectations were met, which rarely happens. They are probably me favourite dream pop band at the moment.

If it's allowed to talk about national acts, then I was also blown away by the new album of a Finnish band called PMMP. Their songs have the best lyrics in all of the country in my opinion; their songs are often breezy and light pop songs, but have terribly sad undertones.

I concur with the High on Fire and Gojira. New High on Fire feels like the best bits of High on Fire put together. Though I can't find much on it as insanely catchy as the title tune from Snakes for the Divine, it holds together much better as an album. I still haven't listened through the new Gojira a whole lot (mostly a time thing), but I love it a lot. The first couple songs draw you in with some nice momentum and then you get locked in the band's rhythm. Definitely worth picking up. I really enjoyed the new Deathhammer album, too. It's an album that does Kreator-style thrash so well that it somehow stands out by itself.

Other things that have been good, but require more listening (off the top of my head):

Cattle Decapitation, Pallbearer, Black Breath, Alcest, Gorod, Municipal Waste, Napalm Death, Overkill, Storm Corrosion, Wizard Rifle, Unsane, Ufomammut, Stoneburner, Struck by Lightning, Dawnbringer and more...

Man, I've been listening to mostly metal albums this year. I guess that comes with having a metal radio show. Gotta stay up to date.

Deltron 3030's new album comes out this year, right? Looking forward to that the most.
I have that Gorillaz song with Andre and Murphy. Do Ya Thing. It's sweet.

So far I haven't downloaded much music that came out this year in particular. Music in general I have downloaded so fucking much. I'm sure I've dl'd some 2012 jazz albums by obscure artists (I have them in my itunes but probably don't remember their names.) Monkey Majik's "Somewhere out There" came out in March, I think, and I think it's their best album since TIME. I'm sure there are a few fans of that band here. I know piratemarimo's one. Also looking forward to Blaise Plant's "Motion Picture".

I discovered Gotye this year thanks to that boring-ass hit song Somebody that I used to Know. Not sure if Making Mirrors came out this year or in 2011, (probably the latter) but it's a great album. My favorite songs in particular are Easy Way Out and In Your Light.
    I'm in a good mood.

The new Sigur Rós album is beauty.

Blood Red Shoes' In Time to Voices and Mark Lanegan's Blues Funeral were amazing, and I'm really excited for John Frusciante's PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone and The Mountain Goats' Transcendental Youth.

Yes! I cannot wait for the new Mountain Goats. I didn't think we would get another album so soon, since it looked like John was getting into an "every other year" rhythm. The theme he has going for it also reminds me of All Hail West Texas. Needless to say, I'm excited.

The only new album from this year that's left a lasting impression on me thus far is Death Grips "The Money Store." I went to a great Radiohead concert a couple weeks ago though, just thought I'd mention it. Oh wait, I also liked Andrew Bird's new album "Break it Yourself." (am I supposed to put the album name in quotations?)

He put the album himself on stream some days ago. And well, it's decent, it isn't as good as Elect the Dead, but not really bad either. It has some mediocre songs, and some great ones. My favorites are Ching Chime, Harakiri, Occupied Tears, Butterfly, and Uneducated Democracy.

The absolute coolest pop music maker in forever releasing a sophomore album sometime soon?

As excited as I can be while still weary.

    Kind of not into this??

It also seems a bit below bar for what his songwriting was on the first album. That being really superb sometimes and really catchy othertimes, but usually always very clever and pretty emotionally gripping or FURK YEAHHH. And this new song is very.... blunt and not very "fck yeah"

    Example of earlier work:

He'll never be able to top this and I've sort of come to terms with that because fuck show me ur stuff is the best

The new Baroness is predictably juicy. Just finishing up the Yellow half and about to move onto green. As all previous reports have stated, the band's moving further away from its sludgy roots, but that doesn't stop it from being fantastic.

Hey bumblefucks, Strand of Oaks, the best folk artist since 2009 (whose Leave Ruin and Pope Killdragon were in my absolute favorite albums of each of their respective years), is releasing a new album called Dark Shore

It is about space and astronaut farmers so it basically is going to be great.

    http://strandofoaks.bandcamp.com/

Info on his bandcamp. And if you like folk music at all, or even music period and you haven't heard Pope Killdragon, do so immediately.

    http://strandofoaks.bandcamp.com/album/pope-killdragon

It has some diverse and interesting moments with genre experimentation and it has a lot of surprises up its sleeve. And some super beautiful lyricism.

    ALSO IT'S THE BEST

    ~good shit~
    Teebs - Cecilia Tapes
    Shlohmo - Vacation EP
    Burial - Kindred EP
    Spiritualized - SHSL
    ~decent shit, not that great~
    Death Grips - Money Store
    Clams Casino - Instrumentals 2
Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action at a Distance
The Caretaker - Patience (After Sebald)

That's the only shit this year that has struck me as being pretty dope. AOTY (even though it's an EP) so far I think is Burial's EP.

But new Flylo, FlyamSam, and Swans are easy contenders for AOTY too. Can't wait to hear them.

Also looking forward to spinning some of the big names in contemporary pop/rock: Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, the xx. I'm not head over heels for any of them, but they've all released pretty good records and I look forward to seeing what they do next. Ain't gonna be AOTY (most likely), but any one of them could secure a spot on the top 10 list for the year.

Every year has at least one classic though...
    2011 - Girls
    2010 - Flylo & Caribou
    etc.

I wonder what it will be this year; I'm willing to go all in on Flylo though. Shit's gonna be dope
