Thread: Sirius XM

    Default Sirius XM

So apparently more people than I realized have this so I wanted to throw this in as a discussion

I use to listen to XMU by default, given their "college radio" oriented format seemed like it'd be a good pick, but that description is basically a lie (unless college radio meant WHAT COLLEGE KIDS LOOK UP ON PITCHFORK) and I've been liking it less and less as time goes by. They seem to rarely update playlists, despite new stuff coming out a lot more than they should, and it seems like even the Blog Radio shows, which should be full of new interesting music, play the same shit as the regular DJs and less and less effort is thrown in. And I realized that I never actually really liked anybody's taste much either anyhow, I mean jesus christ they are playing Neutral Milk Hotel in 2012 and still do so regularly

According to Wagomu, Deep Tracks is pretty awesome and looking into it it seems like it really is pretty cool, I wasn't aware we had a station like that on Sirius XM. I'll try it out later. I guess it's like 60s and 70s rock, except oriented in the direction of underground and lesser known stuff/B-sides so it's by default exceedingly better than any classic rock station. Tom Petty's Buried Treasures sounds like a good program and Bob Dylan has a show too apparently??? Probably more entertaining

what else is up on this shit

I listen to Liquid Metal and Alt Nation the most. I sometimes go to Deep Tracks, The Village, and a few other stations as well. I've been meaning to try out that new Pink Floyd channel.

Edit: I've never heard NMH on SiriusXMU. I used to listen to it but moved to Alt Nation instead as they're similar.

Deep Tracks does a really impressive programming. They play a lot of recognizable bands, though rarely any recognizable songs. When they play something popular, it's usually for a better purpose, like a theme or making great-sounding transitions. One show called All Hand-Mixed Vinyl works for the latter in particular. They also have a good handle on what they're playing and always relay points worthy of note on the music. My SXM listening rests almost entirely with them, since they really know what they're doing and love it, too. I've glanced at other channels occasionally, but nothing else really sticks. There used to be a decent punk channel called Fungus, but that got taken off a while ago during the merger, I believe.

Deep Tracks has really excellent DJing I noticed in my 40 minute drive today

Their lineup sometimes segues in an interesting manner: went folk for a bit with Cat Stevens, then did this Stephen Stills demo, then followed up with a cover of Jimmy Buffet of all people doing "Treetop Flyer".

They played "A flick of the wrist" by Queen which was awesome

They played Wishbone Ash which I had never heard on radio in my life

They admittedly played like two Jethro Tull songs during my listen, which was two too many, but man this was exceedingly so the best classic rock station I've ever listened to because I have only heard unfortunate ones in my lifetime. God, any station that is guaranteed to never play Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway to Heaven is officially the best classic rock station period

Listened to it a little today too and enjoyed it. I got fed up with the classic rock stations around here too because of what you guys said.

I haven't listened to good stations in XM in a long time. Most of the time it's my ipod and an auxiliary cable.
    I'm in a good mood.
