Satori vs Shackey

I'm propably coming off as a broken record after the Monet match, and I know she's facing an extremely reviled character, but.....why? What exactly is it that makes her awesome? I can literally remember her doing nothing of any importance whatsoever, or indeed anything beyond standing around...talking.
Is it the "Cute Girl" factor in effect again? She's been fiercely popular in other tourneys too.

Maybe it's the fact she was stated to have encountered Garp before ? Dunno, she is built up as someone with a rather interesting history, though she realy hasn't done anything.

Well, Shacky has a bit more than just the cute exposition milf status going for her. She is a retired pirate running her rip off bar, beating up clients and being cool with Rayleigh being a gambling old drunkard. Not to mention she is Luffy's fan girl.

But she has nothing against Satori.

Yeah, but that doesn't really translate into anything memorable, or much chance to show off a personality. The potential was there, but...nothing was ever really done with it, she didn't play much of a part in any thing.

Den was Toms brother, and was an established coating master of fishman island, as well as a researcher of the Sea Forest. He had a decent design, and a friendly disposition, as seen as how he complimented Franky on coming to see him, even when he had already gotten letters from Kokoro. He respected his brother, and his life choices, and asked if Frankys ancestor was a robot.
Bare bones of story and character, but I'll be damned if Den is memorable in any sort of way.

And really, Shackey being chill about Rayleigh, and liking Luffy, are about the only instances I can think of where she had an personality on display. She reminded me of Robin trapped in miss Doublefingers civilian profession.
With someone like Satori, it's 100% personality all the time.

Yeah well Oda kind of has a habit of having many characters be not realy utilised and not have a personality. These are mostly side characters though.

Still, it's kinda weird how every single VA aside from Garp has an interchangeable personality, and not even Onigumo did anything to bank on his previous actions. Hell, with Sengoku, we don't even know a whole lot about him, like what are his hobbies or what he does when he's not trying to strangle Garp.

I don't know about you, but I read One piece for entertaining, over-the-top personalities. Franky, Brook, Buggy, Gedatsu, Van der Decken, Ivankov, Magellan et cetera et cetera, guys you don't find anywhwere else. Why do you think Mr 2 is so beloved? His fabulous looks?

Take Shackey, and tranplant her into a dozen other mangas. It'll work.

Someone like Satori? 100% undistilled One Piece, dude only works here.
And thats why I like him.

At least the VAs have never been introduced as anything more than soldiers, and never as true "arc characters" that just get left underdeveloped and utilized on the wayside. If an arc came along with Onigumo as the vilain and he remained as he is, I'd agree with you though.

Satori might have a unique personality sure. Thing is, it's not a likeable one. :[ Like Wanze, he was a 100% unique One Piece character, funny, and god damn disgusting! xD

You dissected Shackey perfectly. "Robin trapped in miss Doublefingers civilian profession". So it's no wonder if some of the mighty Robin's popularity rubs off on her.
