Thread: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Do the Dio Walk!

The moment the main antagonist of SBR reveals himself is roughly the point where SBR becomes top-tier manga.

After the Uber Parfait Adventure, Jojolion has lost me. It's not terrible. . .but it's also so NOT engaging. I was honestly excited at the start of this part, what with it being the first genuinely mistery driven part of Jojo's entire run, but it just feels like it can't keep any momentum going, it's not exciting enough, and it's just. . .ugly. Characters are ugly, flashbacks are ugly, even the fucking abilities are ugly.

And sporadic. For a part that's supposedly well planned out, or should be by all acounts well planned out, things just keep popping up here and there. . .and disappear again. I was honestly excited during the maid-motorcycle stand fight, but has the maid even appeared again? I don't mean in the background, I mean, has she done anything again? Now it's this new girl, who's, so far, not very interesting. We were going somewhere with Corrupt Big Bro (and dad) and the stone people, and now. . .old lover? Spoiled brat from the past?

The thing with Araki is that his weirdness is strangely engaging, and surprisingly badass (most of the time), and his writing is not his main strength. Now we have a part where everything depends on his writing chops, and the weirdness is much more plain ugly than engaging.

I can't hate it, it's JoJo, and Araki's art has improved (well, the faces have improved, the movement shots are kind of sloppy), but so far. . .I'm not enjoying this all that much anymore.

I'm hoping the arc will coalesce better later on once more of the mystery's footing has established, and the monthly format is definitely not helping it in this case, but yeah it ain't doing it for me that wel so far.

    But here I am anyway

I don't understand how anyone can not like this part after last chapter's fight ended with dude getting run over by a bus dressed like a person! And epic stag beetle fights! And did you see that parfait?

This part probably works best as a complete picture but I'm finding the characters engaging enough and I don't feel the plot is as sporadic at this point, things are starting to connect more and more with the stone men and the fruits. This new character is there to tie in Josuke and Kira into that probably. It's not my favorite part but it's fun enough.

But yeah you should just avoid discussing the universes thing too much or some upcoming events in SBR will be confusing

I agree that stag beetle battle and parfait were godly. Same for "your stand is like your asshole".

But the problem for me is that I just can't seem to follow what's going on. I feel like i should be able to. There's a ton of things going on and enough clues that i should be able to tie things together and understand what's going on, more or less (think toriko's mysteries with Acacia and the Nitro. That's a mystery done well). But somehow, it's all explained in such an odd and convoluted fashion that it just confuses you more. And the battles between each new clue don't help the momentum.

Don't get me wrong, i love araki and the weirdness factor but... i just can't get behind this part. To each their own i guess. I'll keep following it and hopefully it'll get good.
-_- o_o O_O ...Agree to disagree sounds about right. Holy moly.

Guy run over by a bus is a great example of Jojolion and what I feel of it. He was this paranoid guy whose girlfriend cheated on him while he was petrified under his bed while she was doing it. . .a flashback that came out of nowhere (and told us little about the man, if anything) while he was throwing żstones? żhis shoes? at some birds that just shat on him, right after he had delivered a fruit that let a grandpa screw his wife in a car while losing his eyes. Hey, it's fucking bizarre, what do you know? Probably the most bizarre Araki has ever been. But it's also sooooo fucking ugly and tasteless. I find myself constantly asking Araki's sanity, but I'm no longer sure I'm doing it in a good, "oh you crazy bastard!" way anymore. More like "really, Araki, did we REALLY have to see THIS?".

And Araki just keeps running this mistery but. . .are we sure he's going in the right direction? He's been adding so many things, so many "keys" to the plot that I'm not even sure he's keeping all this stuff in his notes. Remember we even had a direct link with SBR and the corpse? Yeah, that feels like a millenia ago, what of that? What about the wall eyes? That place where you mix people and things and. . .that? Stone disease? The Higashikatas secrets? The buttler? The mom? There's just SO much stuff to take care of that every time Araki comes up with MORE stuff to keep up with it just dazes me. And, sorry, but I don't think he has the writing chops to make everything fall perfectly into place, and he's built the entire arc so it all NEEDS to fall perfectly into place. First Morioh was about monster of the week, fuck consistency and overall plot, second Morioh is all plot consistency and yet it doesn't feel consistent so far. First Morioh wins so far by a landslide.

And while the parfait was great, I. . .did not enjoy the beetle fight. I liked the first fight with the snakes and razors and shit, and the one with the motorbike stand was probably the best, but trouble with the curve wasn't even remotely decent, and the fight against Rock Guy 1 was also kinda weak. So even if you say "just let yourself go and enjoy what Araki is really good at", even those elements I'm not finding as good. This last fight with Rock Guy 2 was ok, but beyond its conclusion it wasn't thaaat good.

And finally, most of the secondary cast ranges from unmemorable to simply fucking disgusting, specially that fucker, forgot his name, the "rival" guy that's also disgustingly and creepily in love with Yasuho. Holy shit, from his design to his personality, this guy is a fucking abortion of a character. That face, that fucking face. His dialogues. His reactions. His behaviour. I loathe him with every fiber of my body.

I guess I'm being overly negative with Jojolion and it's not even bad, it's decent, but man, it's JoJo and I want to enjoy it more, I want to get into the bizarreness, to embrace it, not get alienated by it.

I'm extremely tempted to put 3 above 7 considering I enjoyed it more, but I know 7 is just. . .better. The art, the writing, the different situations, the flow. . .I just had a personal problem getting into its world and its setting, I found some of the fights confusing and not loving Valentine as much plays a big part in its enjoyment. Climax was so good, though. 3 receives tons of flack, but it still has the most charismatic group of protagonists and some incredibly iconic and memorable moments. 5 has Italy wankery all over it, that sells it for me. And the fucking train fight. 6 is somewhat unpleasant, fights are 50/50 with some being great, others okish and others simply bad (Jongalli A, hello?) and the cast is ok but not great, but there's this jaded, fucked up feeling that makes it both a downer and refreshingly different at the same time, which is. . .good?

But 2 is just beastly. I will never be able to top the definition someone gave it, "Indiana Jones on fucking steroids". The writing is less than stellar, who fucking cares? Every set piece is memorable. Every Joseph scene is memorable. Every pose is memorable. It comes in a tight package. And it's just 25 tons of fun. It's simply one of my favorite things in the entire manga world. It's entertaining to the point of exhilaration, and nothing in the rest of this great series comes close to it.

I'm enjoying it fine but I can feel you if it's going too weird even for you. I'm liking the fights but nothing has been super wow level so far. Hopefully, once we see the whole picture and get a sweet pay off with Pillar Men with Stands (cross fingers), you'll find the whole package worth it.

Part 4 has Kira and Highway Star, hard to compete against that.

Finished the first two Jojonium volumes. Thoughts:

Volume 1 (Chap. 1-11) - To be honest, I really wasn't that enthralled by this series at the get-go. So Jojo (I will never be able to take that name seriously), a rich British kid is constantly tormented by Dio, a sociopathic kid (both of whom look like they're already adults, so I'm a little unsure about the age here) and no one else picks up on it because they're idiots. Then they grow up, somehow get even more muscular (seriously, what do they feed these kids?) and Dio puts his inherit-the-family-fortune plan into action. Jojo manages to expose his plan, but amidst the chaos, Dio gets the Stone Mask. Just...I dunno. The first several chapters are just really down-to-earth and I'm not sure it suits the story. I mean, even plot-wise, a lot of things that happen in these chapters don't seem to matter in the long-run. I mean, I know Araki had to establish Jojo and Dio's rivalry, but it feels like it could have been shortened. And I wish it had, especially since...

Volume 2 (Chap. 12-27) - Ah, no here's where the manga starts to shine. Forget all that conniving family drama stuff, the manga really picks up once Dio dawns the Stone Mask and all the crazy action and supernatural stuff starts happening. Honestly, it almost feels like Volume 1 and Volume 2 are two different series. But anyway, Dio becomes a vampire and all hell breaks loose. Jojo and Dio have their climactic battle, and I'm not even gonna question how the two of them seem to take this in relative stride, because it's honestly really great. Jojo impales Dio as the house burns down and it seems the story's coming to a close and all has been resolved, right? Nope! Turns out Dio's still alive and now Jojo must learn the ways of Hamon from easily one of the best characters so far, Zeppeli (yes, Speedwagon is great too). And really, I just love the way Hamon and the Stone Mask are explained. Both allow the user to enhance their strength from blood and whereas Jojo gets strength from within himself, Dio takes strength from others. It would have been so easy to dismiss it as supernatural mumbo jumbo, but Araki takes the time to really delve into it. Anyway, meanwhile, Dio takes over a town and recruits black-hearted villains to serve him, including Jack the Ripper (who, honestly, considering he's one of real life history's greatest villains, went out kind of disappointingly easily). Jojo and co. make it to the town, prove to be no match for Dio and then must face off against Bluford and Tarkus, two knights who served Mary Stuart (btw, I'm going to say that I don't think that whole backstory of theirs is historically accurate). And, well, let's just say I'm looking forward to how this all concludes in the next volume.

So....yeah, I'm diggin' it. The first arc has had its problems to be sure, but the insane action and art style go a long way to make up for it. And if the general consensus is that this is one of the weaker arcs in the series then, well, color me excited for the arcs to come.

Part 1 is a bit clumsy yeah, but it picks up with the whole "Bizarre" part hitting. And no, the history probably isn't completely right

Still one of the weaker parts all in all, but one where you get some great stuff like old style Dio, Zepelli, Speedwagon narration, it's just a very nice, contained story

    And then Part 2 happens
