    Default Dungeon Meshi

    Author: Ryoko Kui

Genre: Gourmand Survivalist Fantasy Adventure ( I hereby decree this a genre)
    Magazine: Harta
    Publisher: Enterbrain

Things were going well for young adventurer Laius and his dungeon raid party... until a mighty dragon routed them and devoured his sister. Laius and his fellow party members have to hurry back into the dungeon and retrieve her before she is fully digested in order to revive her with magic. However, due to their haste, they forego getting supplies and now their only option is to try to feed on the dungeon's expansive bestiary of monsters and fiends. Luckily, they encounter a dwarf versed in the fine art of dungeon cuisine. Thus begins their daunting endeavor that is both a rescue mission and a gourmet tour.

    The cast!

Laius - The de facto leader of the group: a seasoned dungeon explorer and a rather skilled swordsman. He goes back into the dungeon with Marcille and Chilchuck to save his sister. He is a bit of a manchild and a massive nerd for dungeon creatures, to the point where he even wants to know what they taste like. Thus, this particular aspect of their predicament came to him as a silver lining.

Marcille - A powerful Elven sorceress. Together with Chilchuck she was one of the two members loyal enough to go back in. She plays a straight man to the group's antics and is one member who is absolutely not thrilled by the stuff she has to eat now. She is the whiner of the group, but her whining isn't unwarranted as she gets to suffer from the consequences of Laius' and Senshi's lunacy more often than not.

Chilchuck - A Hobb... sorry Halfling who specialises in trap disposal and lockpicking ( you could call him a ... master of unlocking ). Despite his youthful appearence, he's easily the most mature and professional member of the group.

Senshi - A slightly deranged dungeon-dwelling hermit Dwarf with Mr. Popo's stare. He knows all there is to know on how to make delicous, nutritous meals out of giant bats, basilisks and other spooky dungeon stuff. He values his lifestyle and distrusts magic and easy ways of getting stuff done.

    ________________________________

A greatly entertaining, enjoyable manga. Rather than being epic or dramatic, it focuses on delightful, funny interactions between the rather likable cast and solid worldbuilding. It's adventure has a rather survivalist slant and you better damn believe Senshi can cook up something tasty looking from even the most repulsive critter.

Two complete volumes so far, this series is off to a lovely start!

I particularly enjoy the fact that the cooking and fantasy part are well combined. Even if the focus of a chapter will be a recipe, one also learn the dungeon rules and the adventurers roles. Or when Laius get a "pet" after their fight against living armors.

    Finally! A brand new chapter!

It seems like I found the series and opened this thread in a middle of a break or something, but otherwise releases seem to be consistent.

Apparently Harta magazine is not exactly monthly but has 10 issues per year. So we need to be patient for next chapter.
I really thought Tamari would stay for a moment. The author got me good. And apparently we will definitely see the other previous member in (a near ?) future.
Is it me or Marcille doesn’t really follow the elve stereotype :-)

Has Marcille been fully converted to the dungeon foodie culture or is this a brief deviation and she'll go back to her straight man duties?

It was even more funny when the two ’eat everything’ say they were not interested.

Another thing I enjoy is that, compared to other manga that mix cooking with fantasy or battle concepts, reactions to tasty food are completley reserved and realistic. No one goes foodgasming or literally insane over that tasty giant scorpion stew or something. They react to awesomely delicous food how normal people react to delicous food.

It's a nice change of pace.

    Spoiler:
The world building this chapter was fantastic! Namari's explanation about healing a possessed person and having their personality accidently become a blend of the two was delightfully morbid.

This chapter reminds me how the author stealthily sneaked in some of the dungeon's story back in that one chapter where Laius was diving into magic painting for food.

I wonder how heavily that mad magician plot will intersect with the cast's adventure.

I love how Senshi's suit can barely contain that chest hair.

No or I have not heard about this.

What do you think - will their plan work and they're able to defeat the dragon? Or will they get beaten and have to regroup?

And even if they beat it, what happens next? With everything that was just established in the previous chapter, I can't believe we've really reached the climax, you know?

They just want to kill the dragon to get back Farlyn. After that there is still plenty of mysteries about the dungeon to discover
