Default How To Use IRC (v2)

This is the reposted version of the IRC guide, with new hosting. The special K-F IRC mod is also brand spanking new and well worth a download, even for non-newbies.

Note: This guide is for Windows only. Most of the general information covered will still apply on Mac/nix clients, but the client-specific information will definitely be drastically different.

    Getting Started
    This is easy, I promise.

This guide is for my own special version of Sysreset, which I have configured with several options to take a little of the edge off the initial setup of mIRC.

Just unzip this file to any directory (for example, C:\irc\) using a tool like WinZip.

The only thing you have to set up is choosing your IRC name (called your nick):

Pick a name that's not likely to be taken. "Naruto" would be a bad choice. If your primary Nickname name is taken when you try to connect, it will try to use the Alternative.

That's all for setup. Click [Connect To Server].

When it successfully connects, you will get a channel window which opens to our favorite channel, #Kaizoku-Fansubs:

When you first enter the channel you will see:
    (1) The topic - This is where we put critical information. When there is going to be a release, it goes here FIRST. Any time you want information, you should look right there. People get very annoyed when you ask things which are already in the topic. Type /t at any time to see the topic.

    (2) The Operators - These are the heads of the group. The people most responsible for the daily workings of the channel, including moderation and the fansubs themselves. Their names are light blue and they are given the "op cookie", the @ sign.

    (3) The Half-Ops - These guys are the distro crew. They are the ones who seed the new releases and provide IRC servers. Without the fansubbers, the releases wouldn't exist; without these guys, the release would never get to you. Their names are cyan and they have a % on their names.

(3.5) The Bots - These guys are file serving bots. They are the primary source of episodes on IRC. See the guide below on getting files from these bots. Their names are orange and their names start with K-F|.

    (4) The Voiced Users - These are the people who hang out in the channel and provide mirc-based file servers. Their names have a + on them.

    (5) The Regular Users - These are people just like yourselves. They're just here to get One Piece. They might even be as clueless as you feel. Their names carry no mark.

    Getting One Piece
How to download from a bot.

We have several bots in the channel. They carry episodes of One Piece in varying amounts. You can find their names on the side of the channel. They will usually have a % sign, and their names will start with K-F|.

In the channel example above, K-F|Makino is online and in the channel.

To get a list of the episodes the bot has, you use this trigger:
/msg (name of the bot) xdcc list

So, for K-F|Makino, the trigger is:
    /msg K-F|Makino xdcc list

Most bots that have too many packs to list one at a time will reply with a URL for their list. K-F|Makino is one such bot, so you will get this as a reply:
    -K-F|Makino- (X.D.C.C.) Packs:(299) Pack List at:( http://dythim.mit.edu/Makino/makino.txt ) Sends:(61/100) Queues:(0/0) Current BW:(2884.1KB/s) Transfer Record:(650360.0KB/s) Record BW:(7429.5KB/s) (.:. Kaizoku-Fansubs .:.)
And you find that her pack list is at http://dythim.mit.edu/Makino/makino.txt

Go to that site (or wait for all the packs to list one at a time) and find the pack number you want.
The general form of a pack request is: /msg (name of the bot) xdcc send #(pack you want)
The pack lists all look like this:
    ** 299 packs ** 36 of 100 slots open, Record: 650360.0KB/s
    ** Bandwidth Usage ** Current: 2800.9KB/s, Record: 7429.5KB/s
    ** To request a file type: "/msg K-F|Makino xdcc send #x" **
    #152 284x [231M] [K-F]_One_Piece_152_[983FFEC3].avi
    ** .:. Kaizoku-Fansubs .:. **
Total Offered: 48520.5 MB Total Transferred: 75.69 TB

    The pack number is: #152

To get this pack, from this bot, type in:
    /msg K-F|Makino xdcc send #152

There are around 10 bots, give or take, that hang out in our channel. They all have different pack lists, so use the "/msg <bot's name> xdcc list" command to find them out.
Not all bots are on at all times. If your favorite bot is not online, please be patient.
You will get different speeds from different bots.
You can download only one from from one bot at a time, but you can download two files from two different bots simultaneously.

    Registering IRC
    By popular demand.

You do not have to register mIRC. It is free software, and although it will pop a window saying your trial has expired, the client will never stop working.

If you are using the K-F IRC client provided here, you can register using any name and serial number you want. Here's an example:
    #Kaizoku-Fansubs / 0NePi3ce1rC

THAT'S IT! That is all there is to being able to use IRC. It's a lot of text, but it's really, REALLY easy to do.

There is a lot more you can learn about IRC, such as joining other channels, searching for files, scripting, fserves, and a lot more. But nothing else is necessary for you to be able to download One Piece and chat in #Kaizoku-Fansubs.

Sorry warp, we only offer One Piece. There may be other channels on Rizon which offer ROMs.

Commander Luffy: Try just typing /server irc.rizon.net instead of pressing that button.

Have you downloaded the program as modified by dythim? Are you in the K-F channel? Can you tell us where you are up to and what you have done?

Apis is a good bot to check out as she has every episode but she often gets hammered when a new release comes out. A list of everything on her is here http://apis.homeunix.net/apis.xdcc.list.txt so if you want episode 4, you would type /msg K-F|Apis xdcc send #4 (if you want you can cut and paste what I have just typed when you are in the channel. You can type the | symbol by pressing shift and backslash. If you want a different number then just check the list for the episode you want and the number on the left and type that in instead of the 4.

You will get put into a queue if all available spots are currently filled. Every few minutes or so a yellow line appears and tells you where you are in the queue and approximately how much longer you will have to wait.

When a new episode is released, one of the crew posts release triggers regularly to let everyone in the channel know what to do and which bots have the latest episode.

I dowloaded the program. I'm in the K-F Channel. That's about it.

I don't understand where I need to go and what I need to click on to make a request. I've tried pasting, but I don't know where to paste it.

I'm not a computer expert, and I don't know what a queue or trigger is.

    for episode 4:
    /msg K-F|Smoker xdcc send #4

    for episode 16:
    /msg K-F|Smoker xdcc send #16

and so on, up to the latest release, 163.

you just have to be on our channel when you type them.

if you type /msg K-F|Smoker xdcc list
you get the site with the list of all the packs.

this should work on all the bots, I think, /msg K-F|(Name) xdcc list

Thanks, I'll give it a try and see what happens.

EDIT - Nope, nothing is happening.

Okay, I guess I don't actually know as much as what I think I know about IRC. (Which was very little to begin with. I've never used IRC before). Just in case I got the wrong idea of what it is, what's a channel? All I can get is a black screen that includes what a bunch of other users have written as well as who has left and who has just joined and another similar screen.

    Also, what's a queue and what's a trigger?

The channel is #Kaizoku-Fansubs, you join it and all data that is fed into the channel is read by everyone subscribing to the channel.

A trigger is a command which causes something to happen. In this case, a bot will send you a file. There are other IRC triggers, but this is the one you want.

And most simply, a queue is when you wait in line for your send.

A queue is a list of files that will be sent once there is an opportunity to send them. Most of the servers have a number of sends they do, but also a number of queues so that they can accomodate more people without straining their bandwidth for multiple sends.

Okay, I think I can figure this out.

Oh, I see that none of the episodes are in formats that work on my laptop. Too bad.

    Are you using K-F sysreset?
If not, press Alt+O, go to DCC->Ignore and set it to Disabled and uncheck Turn back on.
If you are, the bot may be experiencing problems, either on its hosting computer or in its route between your two computers. There's not much you can do about this, but if you wait a day or so it may fix itself.

Ok, how do you download the episodes after they send them to you, when I click the links they give me nothing comes up. Do I have to type it into my internet browser?
