As I said before (or maybe only thought?), people around here might have been too optimistic about the mid-terms. Still many things that can happen to influence the race though.

    On that note:

"These Idaho primaries were quite different, but each victor spoke Tuesday of hope"

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/news/p...211126534.html
    ----
So the Idaho primaries concluded and the big race, the Governor primary ended with the Republican nominee being moderate Brad Little, endorsed by our current governor, and Paulette Jordan.

Main reason I bring it up is because with these results and the House primary having its own candidate, my local rep, Raul "A Founding Member of the Freedom Caucus" Labrador, will be effectively out of commission for at least a while come November, as his House term is up and he failed his gubernatorial bid.

Given my concerns that a female Native American has been slim odds at winning in a Red State, I feel some comfort that at least a moderate will be the alternative and not a big name tea partier.

That said, I'd love to be proven wrong about Jordan and have every intention of voting for her. I just don't like the odds very much and feel victory depends on high Democratic turnout (and it ''was'' higher than expected in my county in particular)

There's also a chance that both Lieutenant Governor candidates will be women, a first in Idaho's history.

You say that, but Trump's polls have been historically low throughout his presidency compared to similar times for past Presidents and rarely climb far above 40%, usually maintaining something in the thirties.

People think the fact he seems to be so active in his job regardless of it being good or bad means he is working hard for them, and therefore justified in voting for him and will be again.

The thing about the Trump circus is that all energy goes to covering that and nobody’s focusing on covering the rock solid Democratic policy platform. Which means the narrative is A) nobody’s giving Trump credit for anything or whatever and B) the Dems stand for nothing except anti-Trump and the Russia collusion stuff. Doesn’t help that the Senate Democrats are a bunch of pushovers who shill for the Jerusalem embassy or vote for torturers.

The Democratic base is going to turn out no matter what, but the on the fence shitty centrists might just stick to the status quo, because while they’re worried about Trump’s conduct, they think the economy is more important (,stupid).

(And yes obviously no story will matter until October and things might change when health premiums rise or the Dem platform gets more coverage)

Well yeah, in the same way that we're not really concerned about new drapes or a patio set when we really just want to stop this guy from setting the house on fire.

Speaking of midterms, the Senate voted to repeal the FCC's Net Neutrality changes today. While we still need the House and Trump to pass this, names are on the books. Hopefully this is something that can be used on the campaign later.

So it looks like Scott Pruitt has a total of at least 14 federal investigations to his name. In addition to the scandal concerning the EPA's efforts to bury a federal study concerning toxic chemicals.

"You’re trailing a string of ethical lapses and controversies, they’re an embarrassment to the agency, an embarrassment to Republicans and Democrats alike," Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.) told Pruitt at a Senate hearing. "Forget about your own ego and your first class travel and your special phone booths and all these things that just make you a laughingstock and your agency a laughingstock."

The news has a way of making him look like he's more active than he seems by reacting to the controversy of his decisions. But trump supporters who have been personally inconvenienced in the business market and have lost workers and money still want to vote for him again on the grounds he is a business dealer, and it'll all work out in the end.

It is extremely embarassing for Democrats that three Republicans will be voting against a torturer and five Democrats will carry her over the finish line. Nobody in Indiana will give a shit about Joe Donnelly's vote on an extremely controversial CIA director pick.

Day 483: Disgusting, illegal and unwarranted.

1/ Trump marked Robert Mueller's one year anniversary as special counsel by offering "congratulations" to America, tweeting "we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History." Trump charged that the FBI had "SPIED" on his campaign with an "EMBEDDED INFORMANT," which makes the Russia investigation "bigger than Watergate!" Trump claimed he's had the "most successful first 17 month Administration in U.S. history," overcome a "disgusting, illegal and unwarranted Witch Hunt," and noted there is "still No Collusion and No Obstruction." He added that "the only Collusion was that done by Democrats who were unable to win an Election despite the spending of far more money!" (New York Times / Washington Post / CNN / NBC News)

The Secret Origins of the Trump Investigation. Days after the F.B.I. closed its investigation into Hillary Clinton in 2016, agents began scrutinizing the presidential campaign of her Republican rival, Donald J. Trump. (New York Times)

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/16/u...stigation.html

Inside year one of the Mueller investigation. As the Mueller probe hits its one-year anniversary, the special counsel's team has brought charges against 22 people and companies, notched five guilty pleas and seen one person sentenced. While a number of those charges were related to Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, so far none of them has extended to potential collusion between the Russian government and Trump associates. (CNN)

    https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/17/polit...ide/index.html

One year into investigation, Mueller shows no signs of letting up. The president calls it a “witch hunt” on Twitter, the White House calls it “Russia fever” – but Robert Mueller, who has now spent exactly one year looking into Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential campaign, shows no signs of slowing down in his secretive investigation that looms over the Trump White House. (ABC News)

    https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/year...ry?id=55221414

Is Trump's rhetoric about an informant in his campaign warranted? On the first anniversary of the appointment of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to take over the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign and any overlap with Donald Trump’s campaign, now-President Trump used his preferred political superlatives to disparage that inquiry on Twitter. 2/ Trump referred to some undocumented immigrants as "animals," saying "these aren't people. These are animals." Trump also suggested that the mayor of Oakland, California should be charged with obstruction of justice for warning her constituents about ICE raids in February. "You talk about obstruction of justice," said Trump. "I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland." (New York Times / Washington Post)

4/ The unnamed law enforcement official who leaked confidential financial records about Michael Cohen and his shell company last week did so because the official was worried that information was being withheld from law enforcement. Two suspicious activity reports filed by Cohen's bank were missing from the database managed by the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. "I have never seen something pulled off the system," the official said. "That system is a safeguard for the bank. It's a stockpile of information. When something's not there that should be, I immediately became concerned." The official continued: "That's why I came forward." (New Yorker)

    https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-...ancial-records

5/ Michael Cohen solicited a payment of at least $1 million from the Qatari government in late 2016. Cohen offered to provide access and advice about the then-incoming Trump administration in exchange. Qatar declined the offer, which came following a Dec. 12, 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between Qatar's foreign minister and Michael Flynn. Cohen didn't attend the meeting, but did speak separately to Ahmed al-*Rumaihi, who was head of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund at the time. (Washington Post)

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...=.e7e02612bd74

6/ The Cambridge Analytica whistleblower testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that the data company offered services intended to discourage voting and suppress voter turnout. Christopher Wylie didn't provide specifics about the services offered by Cambridge Analytica, but he did allege that African-American communities were particular targets of the company's "voter disengagement tactics." He also said that political actions committees requested such voter suppression services from Cambridge Analytica. (CNN)
