Thread: General Square Enix Thread II

Locke is cool. But we're still missing characters from the old roster so....

Also, the 3 v 3 gameplay is awful, just like in Gundam versus, and ruins the game. (Along with the dumbing down of the battle mechanics and customization in order to balance having teams of three.)

Maybe it works in arcades but its awful for a single player home game.

Just like the 45th aniversary jump game that is inferior in every way to Jump Ultimate Stars (snip that rant here and focus on gameplay)

Having the main mechanic of a single player experience with 2 other AI players is just unapealing, double that if it's a fighting game.

Like let's say Wow or diablo where you sometimes get an AI companion, or you can play a mook-based character and have your very simple minions wail on an enemy or heal you (but both is a bad idea unless you have the FFXII gambit system to program them to your needs), but there is a reason why that isn't done in a fighting game, where presicion and reading your opponent is the key ability. The AI is either too dumb and you are just reacting to a stage hazzard, or too random and can't even feel it's rythm.

So, talk to me about bravelly second? Back when it came out I thought to myself "I'm not ready for another Bravely Default", but looking at things for the 3ds I realized that I'd like to play it or something like it.

Wait, so Octodad's letters is an.. acronym for the names of the characters?

Got bravely second, it's been good I guess, the chain battle system is good.

But this catspaw is just, I need to suspend my disbelief for her way too much.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SHOOT PEOPLE WITH A DOG!

Going to perform a drive by shooting on Squall, but instead of a gun, it's just going to be Rinoa pulling up, rolling down her window, blasting rap music out of her car, and firing Angelo at him. Fucking RIP.

What a dumb last name...which I know is par for the course in Final Fantasy along with dumb first names but still.

Dammit, between this, the new Fire Emblem, and the inevitable new Pokemon, I really am going to have to get a Nintendo Switch.

Pumped to get Octopath in two days, loved the demo.

Also Rinoa in Dissidia? Thought they'd throw in Seifer, but cool.

Yeah, not even Smash Bros would made me care about it who would join it if the gameplay was like this game.

So wait, are they finally adding in the half of the roster that was missing from 012.... or are they just adding in AI enemies that look like them?

Either way it really doesn't matter because they took the fantastic 1 on 1 combat from the previous games and completely ruined it with 3 on 3. WHich as I've said before, might work fine in arcades when you've actually got 5 other people around you, but is super awful for consoles. Same for Gundam Versus.

Having to count on two AI teammates and not being able to focus on any one enemy just sucks... and it also leads to more limited lamer movesets.

These are characters looking to be added:

Why did they add Vayne if in the next season you would just give the OG villain in the other games.

Or add Zack (I know they will add him Crisis Core from) but he's another FF7 rep basically.

They are only now adding villain rep to 11, but not to 13, 14 or 15. Hell they are adding another rep from 13 instead of a villain.

    Yahtzee did an Octopath review:
    http://www.escapistmagazine.com/vide...opath-Traveler

Yahtzee is silly Yahtzee, but how he described it is basically how I saw it might be. I might be a little more into it than he is, being more JRPG fan than him.

    SE sales updates:

Octopath has shipped 1 million so far.

-Sales stronger than firm's pre-sales forecast; exceeded expectations especially in U.S. & Europe
    - Higher-than-average ratio of download version vs packaged
    - (Your analysis on success?) more appreciation to JRPG in recent years, game design that appeals to old Square Enix game fans, new elements including HD-2D, attractive characters etc.
-(You still think Switch's a good platform for middle-range games?) Yes.
-(Can we expect more of similar games from you?) Yes
-(Platforms?) Octopath is Switch exclusive, where appropriate for forthcoming ones.
They are also teasing something Bravely Default related for Switch.

Nier has shipped over 3 million units, SE is hiring for the next game and considers it a major franchise.

FFXV has sold 7.7 million, 4th best selling and fasting selling at the moment. 300k away from FX and 1.1 away from FF8, FF7 is at 11 million.

Cool. Though I'm curious how the controls and split screen work at all on anything other than the DS it came out on.
