Default Oda's INSPIRATION for One Piece

this thread was once fun, with someone finding count chocola as foxy, and that hugo boss model as pauley (that was a hella good one)

if i don't remember wrong, VOEL brought this up last time. i still think this is the best find.

and i still vouch for jim carrey in ace ventura being the model of franky. only he didn't wear speedos.

What's really great about the shirt is that Paulie's shirt in the anime is the same shade of yellow and has a white bulls-eye, which makes it practically the inverse of the model's shirt. Franky is still Popeye to me (note to self: go buy Hulk hands to modify to Franky hands over spring break).

Well, Popeye was based on a guy named Frank Fiegel after all. Blueno also makes me think that the reference is most likely to Segar's creation.

I think its pretty interesting. Franky's hair style seems a lot like Ace Ventura (I think I'm missing something else)?

I think its pretty cool to compare the hugo boss modle to Pauly, though Pauly has the flame design on the ends of his overcoat and the cigars.

any other insperations? oh yeah! I know that there is a pic that looks some what similar to choppers design, although its not an inspirations. I'll take a pic.

:( unfortunatly I've searched the kitchen and found that the pic was gone. if I get another chance to nab the pic I'll take a photo. ps. it was on a pepsi bottle for a compettition.

Someone also mentioned in the old thread that Lucci looked like a singer (I forgot which) It was a good similarity.

    Oh, and here is Foxy/Chocula;

EDIT: I still say Franky was inspired by Robocop :P

Also, the Square sisters design & Olive Oyl, another Popeye connection.

I originally thought of Robin as Olive Oyl, but you're probably right about the Square Sisters taking that part, Battle Franky. If Franky has a twister punch that knocks out Blueno...well, that will be the end of the matter.

Spinach revives Popeye, when he's out of energy.

Coke revives Franky when he's all tapped out.

    Coincidence...?

when I think about Blueno's character design then it reminds me of the bad guy in Popeye who goes by the name of Bluto (blueno)? besides hes huge, and when I took a look at his design, the neck part looks similar.

foxy has everything that chocola has besides the pointy ears and being dracula.

Funny you mention that. In 2004, I Was Born to Love You was the theme song to the popular drama PRIDE which started Kimutaku. Japan hit another Freddie Mercury spurt (which it tends to do every few years).

You know....no matter how many times that DB picture gets posted, it's always going to look like Luffy from behind and yet it still remains only a cute coincidence. As if Oda was truly inspired by nameless/faceless hick #7643 in DB. Take note of how many other useless BG characters wear that kind of gear in Tenkaichi Budoukai scenes and southern cities. As if straw-hats were THAT uncommon.

Well, maybe not, but I did seem to recall that Oda once said he liked DB (I've learnt not to trust my memory though), so maybe it grew onto his memory and he drew it when he started thinking of 'One Piece'...Then again, that's just me.

 Really? (Dang, and I thought my 'discovery' was an original one, judging from the surprised people I get every time I mention it.)

You know, all of this actually makes it more likely that Oda picked up Luffy's design from Dragon Ball.

If it always looks like Luffy from behind, then it's probably more than a cute coincidence, especially if that particular design is common in Dragon Ball (though I don't really recall any others being quite as good an example as this). In fact, if that design is common throughout Dragon Ball, then it's that much more probable that he picked up the design from Toriyama.

Really, why couldn't Oda be truly inspired by nameless/faceless hick #7643? What makes it so unlikely that he was reading the Cell Saga, saw this character design that he liked, and it stuck in his head, especially if, as you say, it's something that often pops up in Dragon Ball?

Oda has described Toriyama as a god and his favorite artist, has he not? So he was an avid reader of the series, which means that he probably was influenced by it. This is a more obvious example where I am concerned.

Listen. I am also an avid fan and reader of Dragon Ball. I hardly even noticed the design of that bystander. Why? Because it's so incredibly common. You could probably stumble across thousand similar looking designs anywhere.

If the design of that bystander was very unique and original, and one of the characters in One Piece happened to be designed in a similar way, then we could speak of an influence. This is a straw hat and a black shirt.

That's like saying the fact Nami has red hair was inspired by that one redhead who appeared as a bystander for a fraction of a second in that one movie made decades ago which Oda happened to have seen once.

It's a possibility, but most likely nothing more than a coincidence. Pruf.
