Other than pirating games (something I don't intend to do unless it's a games that'll never come to the US) and emulation of non-PSP systems, what benefits are there to homebrewing your PSP? Also, how high are the risks (such as bricking)?
And another unrelated question. I know you can hook the PSP up to your TV to play, but how does it look? (moreso with newer games, I know old ones would look ass) And is it fullscreenable? Also, what cable do I need?
I'll like to know this too.
Because most likely, I'm going to hack the hell out of my PSP.
The risk of bricking is ridiculously low.
Homebrewing brings a lot of cool apps that allow your PSP to reach a higher potential. Youtube player, play personal music while playing games, energy management, reading text files, opening zips and rars and other stuff I don't feel like looking up.
I wouldn't know anything about the TV part because I bought a Playstation Portable for, you know, portable gaming.

I'm not a portable gamer, I'm buying the PSP cause it has some awesome games.
There's a PSP-to-TV component cable that you can buy. It's pretty obvious what it is when you see one; I got mine at a Gamestop, and mostly to play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite via Adhoc Party (turns local multiplayer into online multiplayer). It uses about 75% of your TV's screen, and looks... a little weak. Even for a high-res game like Monster Hunter. I prefer playing it on the small screen.
Most games work fine on the TV and I think they look damn good. Obviously not as crisp but pretty sweet. I used it mostly for FF8, Suikoden and Monster Hunter.
HOWEVER, and I'm not sure if this applies to all beat games, Patapon did NOT work. I dunno what the deal was, a techie could probably explain it but the timing did not work at all and it is completely unplayable.
I found my PSP the other day.
About 1/10 of the screen was dead pixels. While you could still play the games its more than a little annoying -_-
God of War 3 feels kind of flat when compared to God of War.
I agree.. the first game was a lot of fun and was something new to the table.
But ever since, it's been more of the same. Sure the beginning 20 minutes of number 3 are pretty damn cool... but it's all visual. Sure you may be on the back of a titan fighting some other mythical thing. But the feeling of epicness that oh say, Shadow of the Colossus gave with climbing a giant is lost in GOW:3... it just LOOKS cool.
Kratos punching Poseidon through his water horse in slow motion LOOKED epic.
but after the crazy start, the game just spiraled down into it's tired and true formula.
Eh, I dunno. Maybe I'm just desensitized, but I thought all 3 God of War games were of pretty much the same quality.
EDIT: @Gekko: Yeah, I suppose. The sequels didn't really offer anything new aside from some gimmicks and weapons, so yeah, I guess Gof of War 1-3 are all pretty much just the same game. But hey, nothing necessarily wrong with that. I liked all of them.
It is NOT a bunch of QTE's. That's the same tired bullshit haters and Microsoft fanboys use to diss the series. Getting on GoW for its QTE is no different than getting on any game with a repeated gameplay feature, which is ALL OF THEM. And what's wrong with magic being weapon based? Would you prefer Kratos to become an RPG character?
I will agree that all games in the series are the same thing, but how is that a negative when the core is so good? How many game series have completely changed their gameplay only to have fans and critics wish they went back to how they were?
Well day in and day out you hear fanboys complain about other game franchises for being "more of the same" when that =/= the game being bad.
Almost every single franchise out there does its fair amount of rehashing, sometimes sequels will get changed only to have their majorly hardcore fanboys bitch and whine "OH IT'S SO DIFFERENT OH ITS DEAD TO ME NOW IT RUINED THE SERIES OOHHH"
I'm in a good mood.
I loved every bit of GoW3. Every last drop.
Was is precisely the same as SoC? No. But then again, that's a game where the entire engine was designed around climbing gigantic mythical beasts. If it didn't beat GoW in that department it wouldn't be as memorable.
hope i'm not the one being called the "fanboy" here.
I just put it plain and simple that GOW:1 was a lot more fun for me back when it was fresh. Not to say that GOW:3 is a bad game, I just felt underwhelmed with it about halfway through. Around the time i got to one of the puzzles i think.
the comparison i made to SoC is more to imply that it feels cooler in a game when you take part in an epic event YOU, the player, controls. I've always liked the QTE's of GOW since they are fun to watch, cause they're stylish and brutal. But stuff that really get's my blood pumping is when the character is in my full control.
A good example of a epic moment (in a terrible game, go figure) is: Bionic Commando (the new release). There's this boss fight against this giant mechanical worm with a giant laser on it's face. Blah blah, there's a moment where it grabs you and tosses you up into the air and points it's kamehameha cannon at you and begins charging it as you fall towards the ground. You control the character on his decent and are able to slam your fist right into it's face right before certain death. No QTEs, you're in control. IF you miss, then you get fried. ( I think you can even opt to dodge too). It felt very satisfying. Too bad the rest of that game was shit.
